Intercad launches SolidWorks 2008 at the second SolidWorks World Australia Conference
Computer-aided design and manufacturing specialist Intercad will launch the latest edition of SolidWorks CAD/CAM software at the second SolidWorks World Australia Conference to be held in Melbourne on September 10.
SolidWorks 2008 accelerates better product design by leveraging existing designs to save time and ensure accuracy. The package includes base levels of design automation technology to automate repetitive tasks and improve designs by giving feedback about quality and manufacturability upfront – before designs are passed into the next, and more expensive, stage of manufacturing.
SolidWorks World Australia 2007 will include in-depth sessions on the new features contained within SolidWorks 2008, expert tips and tricks on using the software and customer examples to show the technology in action. Breakout sessions will include information about SolidWorks associated products and an education stream will take attendees through SolidWorks’ educational philosophy and the new associate training certificate. A variety of Australian products designed using SolidWorks will be on display throughout the day in the product showcase.
A highlight of the inaugural 2006 conference was the Model Mania design competition, which saw the winner, Gary Bortz from Bortz Design, win a high-end Hewlett-Packard workstation for designing the most accurate model component in the shortest period of time. This year the Model Mania competition will be split into two parts, design and design verification, which will test delegates in the use of analysis software.
SolidWorks 2008 is aimed at allowing designers to concentrate on creating better designs, rather than on using the software. Advances in SolidWorks Intelligent Feature Technology (SWIFT) enables designers to edit their models with drag handles and automatically applies accurate geometric dimensions to parts of a design. Design automation generates parts, assemblies and drawings based on pre-defined engineering rules – users simply enter design variables and the software generates the required materials.

Additional SolidWorks 2008 features include:
· A Streamlined User Interface predicts and makes available the tools users will need for the model they are working on. The interface also makes it easier to navigate commonly used commands and customise layout options.
· High-powered Large Assembly Management Tools simplify large assemblies and enable the designer to view the entire assembly and quickly select individual components to work with.
· Improved search functions include searches not only on file names but also on metadata, like notes on a CAD drawing or specific customisations. Once an item has been found it can be dragged and incorporated into new designs.
· DWGnavigator allows designers to manage 2D files from the SolidWorks desktop including searching, viewing and packaging files for sharing.
· COSMOSWorks Design Insight easily identifies parts of a model that carry a load and assists designers with decisions on whether to increase materials for strength or subtract materials to avoid over-engineering.
· TolAnalyst determines the effect that tolerances have on parts and assemblies. It enables designers to work with worst-case scenario tolerance and helps ensure that they will meet proper fit and function requirements for manufacturing while using materials efficiently.
· DFMXpress identifies geometry that is difficult, expensive or impossible to manufacture. It reduces the time needed to consult with manufacturing specialists and ensures downstream errors are minimised because designs are right the first time.
· SolidWorksMotionManager allows users to see how an assembly moves and how components interact. Data from within this function can also be used to create presentations and for validation purposes.
