The City of Subiaco proudly presents Sunset@Subi, a free community event showcasing the very best of contemporary music and performing arts talent in the west.
The series kicks off at 5.30pm on Sunday 13 December with Australia’s hottest new Indigenous rock band, The Yabu Band.
Picking up five major Western Australian (WA) music awards between 2008 and 2009 including WA Indigenous Act of the Year 2009, WA Indigenous Contemporary Album 2009, The Yabu Band were voted ‘Most Promising New Act’ at the national Indigenous Deadly Music Awards in October.
This rock trio, featuring the talented brothers Delson and Boyd Stokes and drummer Jade Masters, are building a reputation as a standout original act in the Australian rock scene by turning dreamtime stories into contemporary song. The band has produced two album releases including Looking to the Future and Gundalla – We Dance, which features a version of the song We Are Australian performed in Western Desert language.
The brothers are originally from Kalgoorlie, the Goldfields town bordered by the Western Desert from where they draw their heritage, culture and inspiration. 'Yabu' means rock/gold in their language, Wongatha.
The Yabu Band blend a traditional Australian aboriginal instrumentation of the didjeridu and percussion sticks such as boomerang clapsticks into a contemporary country rock style that give them a unique musical sound.
The concert takes place at JH Abrahams Reserve, The Avenue, Crawley Foreshore. Bring a rug and a picnic and watch the sunset while enjoying the sounds of this innovative new Australian rock phenomenon.
The Yabu Band is the first of twelve concerts that make up the City of Subiaco’s summer Sunset@Subi concert series. For more information or a brochure contact the City of Subiaco on 9237 9222 or visit the website www.subiaco.wa.gov.au.
