VCE Grads – Earn while you learn

Announcement posted by Master Builders Association of Victoria 14 Dec 2009

A career in building and construction is still an exciting option for school leavers

The Master Builders Association of Victoria says a career in building and construction is still an exciting option for school leavers as thousands of VCE graduates receive their results today.

Master Builders Executive Director Brian Welch said the building industry was still suffering from a skills shortage so plenty of secure, long-term job opportunities exist.

“A career in building and construction can be extremely rewarding both financially and personally,” he said.

“Residential building activity in Victoria has been surprisingly resilient this year with strong population growth and government stimulus measures creating solid demand for housing.

“New starters in traditional trades such as bricklaying, roofing, plumbing, plastering, carpentry, tiling and painting are in short supply.

“The best thing about starting a trade apprenticeship is the bonus of being paid to learn and those who complete an apprenticeship could expect to be earning $50-60,000 after four years.

“According to Skills Victoria, each year over 3,600 people commence apprenticeships in the general construction sector.

“Average weekly earnings in the industry amounted to $1,364 in February 2009 in Victoria and over 86 per cent of workers were employed on a full-time basis.

“The second best thing is that many apprentices go on to be successful small business owners and be their own boss.

“High school graduates or parents interested in more information about the sector can contact the Master Builders Association of Victoria on 9411 4555 or visiting www.mbav.com.au
