D-Link And Texas Instruments Collaborate On New Super Fast Wireless Solutions

Announcement posted by D-Link Australia 08 Jun 2002

TI-based chip boosts the performance of the D-Link Air series of wireless networking products for the home and office
D-Link and Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) have formed a strategic partnership to offer wireless networking solutions capable of speeds up to 22 megabits per second, double the industry-standard rate of 11Mbps.
D-Link will integrate TI's ACX100 silicon chip into its 2.4GHz D-Link Air wireless networking series, to provide higher data rates and wider coverage areas to home and business customers.
TI's new 802.11b (a wireless standard also known as Wi-Fi) technology gives D-Link high-performance, standards compliant wireless that is interoperable with current 802.11b products. The chip also delivers a 30 percent improvement in throughput at 11Mbps.
"D-Link chose the ACX100 technology from Texas Instruments because it offers speeds that are twice the industry standard. It also features a versatile and powerful design that will allow consumers to achieve greater levels of performance when networked to other IEEE 802.11b compliant wireless devices," said Graeme Reardon, business development manager, telecommunications for D-Link Australia and New Zealand. "We can deliver extended reach and range at even faster speeds when the TI-based D-Link Air networking products are connected to each other."
D-Link will continue to use silicon supplier Intersil Corporation for some items, but the bulk of its wireless products will switch to TI chips, added Mr Reardon.
D-Link Air
D-Link Air wireless connectivity solutions provide maximum throughput and advanced roaming capabilities for wireless e-mail access, Internet connectivity, file sharing, and other network resources. Share Internet connections by networking all the PCs in the home to one broadband Internet connection and save on the cost of multiple broadband accounts.

Texas Instruments ACX100
Comprised of an integrated Media Access Controller (MAC) and baseband processor, the TI ACX100 wireless chip provides affordable, high-performance 802.11b operation. TI has strongly prioritised interoperability allowing equal or better performance with the TI ACX100 when used in an 802.11 network that is not TI-based. TI's 802.11 designs deliver better performance through optimisation of design resources of TI and industry leading radio manufacturers.
