Showcasing Melbourne’s contemporary Latin American and Spanish music, this year’s programme will feature new interpretations of the traditional rhythms of salsa, merengue, and bossa nova. The line-up will also include fiery performances by leading tango and flamenco dancers.
Taste authentic flavours at a wide variety of speciality market stalls, preparing typical dishes from the twenty-two different Spanish speaking countries and browse the treasures of the traditional arts and crafts. There will also be plenty for the kids to do with a magical act, face painting, a Bollywood dance workshop, music body percussion and more.
We invite all Melbournians to come and enjoy the day. Sample sizzling paella, dance a sumptuous samba or relax with a refreshing drink. Don’t miss the transformation of the Queen Victoria Market into a vibrant and colourful community celebration!!!
La Plaza del Mercado is brought to you by CELAS (The Spanish Latin American Welfare Centre Inc.) who provide community assistance and services to the 25,000 Spanish speaking people in Victoria. Proudly sponsored by the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) and the City of Melbourne, the Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said:
“La Plaza del Mercado is an exciting, unique, fun filled event. It is an opportunity to hear the voices of the Latin and Spanish community within Melbourne’s multicultural society.”
