Tolly Group tests validate OmniSwitch carrier-class features

Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) announced today that The Tolly Group, a leading consulting and independent testing organization, certified Alcatels OmniSwitch family delivers carrier-class reliability, achieves wire speed performance in demanding network conditions, and offers easy and effective Quality of Service (QoS) management. Products tested at The Tolly Groups state-of-the-art test facility included the Alcatel high-end core, edge and stackable switches, respectively the Alcatel OmniSwitch 8800, 7800, and 6600.
Alcatel-pioneered features such as Smart Continuous Switching and Configuration Rollback were highlights of the test because they address the mission-critical nature of todays enterprise data networks. Together with the pricing that is extremely aggressive for the enterprise, these tests demonstrate that Alcatel provides the highest availability for todays mission-critical enterprise networks.
Alcatels OmniSwitch carrier-class availability is unparalleled in the industry. Tests showed that Alcatels Smart Continuous Switching ensures nonstop switching when components in redundant configurations fail. In fact, Alcatel tests show the OmniSwitch can even learn new flows during failover. Tolly Group tests also validated that Alcatels Configuration Rollback automatically restores the network to its previous state when software failure or configuration errors occur. In addition to these unique features, The Tolly Group also verified power supply redundancy, standards-based link aggregation (802.3ad), Rapid Reconfiguration Spanning Tree (802.1w), and Virtual Router Redundancy protocol.
With availability as vital now in enterprise networks as it has traditionally been in carrier networks, performance is still as relevant as ever in any network scenario. In its highest port density Gigabit Ethernet test ever, The Tolly Group tested the OmniSwitch 8800Alcatels flagship Ethernet switch that is built on a true 10-Gigabit architecture. In the test, the OmniSwitch 8800 achieved zero-loss throughput with 128 ports of Gigabit Ethernet traffic flowing through the switch, using a wide range of Ethernet packet sizes. This means that Alcatel can deliver wire-speed services such as QoS, Server Load Balancing, VLANs, Authenticated VLANs, and Access Control Lists in the most challenging of network environments.
All OmniSwitch products tested support the same software, services, and network management, a key advantage for Alcatel over competing products. The Tolly Group also verified the industrys first automatic QoS feature, Alcatels PolicyView with One Touch QoS, which lets administrators define and assign QoS priorities with the click of a mouse.
QoS has proven to be absolutely critical in managing priority and bandwidth for time-sensitive applications like IP telephony and video-streaming. At present, much of the industrys offerings still offer yesterdays impossible-to-manage QoS tools, while others fail to mention that auto capabilities exist for voice only. Alcatels PolicyView with OneTouch QoS addresses both voice and data QoS, effectively and easily.
Customers, analysts, and other industry leaders have all noted that vendors understand the need for highly-available enterprise networks, but have not actually substantiated the degree with which they can deliver them, said Patrick Liot, president, Alcatel. Alcatel was the first to address this issue and verify that it could provide carrier-class availability from its chassis products to its stackable product line. Coupled with strong QoS and wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet throughput, the OmniSwitch is a powerful solution for enterprises.
The Alcatel OmniSwitch 7000 was awarded Internet Telephony Magazines Product of the Year in January as a cutting-edge enterprise LAN switch ideal for IP telephony and mission-critical applications.
