Announcement posted by Ideas International Limited 13 Jul 2010
The server consolidation tool Server Consolidation Analysis Resource (Server CAR), from Ideas International (ASX:IDE) has recently been improved in two key areas. Firstly, analysis of power and carbon usage has been enhanced with support for before and after analysis in different locations. And secondly, customer server utilization data can now be easily imported and modelled as part of any server consolidation analysis. These improvements result in creating substantial time savings and greater levels of accuracy in calculating data center server consolidation power, cooling and carbon savings.
Server Consolidation Tool Carbon Usage Savings Improvements
The Server Consolidation tool, Server CAR from Ideas International (IDEAS) has had the integrated Carbon Calculator feature enhanced to allow the selection of different location parameters for the Installed and Target servers to cater for server consolidation projects involving relocating servers between locations with different electricity costs and CO2e per kilowatt parameters.
The Carbon Calculator calculates current and proposed electricity costs and savings, CO2 equivalent emissions and reductions, and carbon emissions and reductions, when modelling server consolidation scenarios via the Server CAR tool. Server CAR provides online access to the most comprehensive database of current and historical server configurations marketed by the leading server manufacturers, dating back to 1996.
Carbon Calculator results are provided in localized currency and units of measurement, quantifying carbon emission and carbon footprint reductions for reporting against corporate sustainability goals.
This most recent improvement provides users with an even more sophisticated before and after server consolidation analysis, with the new ability to model before and after scenarios in different locations. These locations may be different countries, or different states within a large country such as the USA.
Smart Import Server Utilization Improvements
Smart Import provides an essential productivity enhancement to Server CAR subscribers by automating the cleansing and import of server asset data into a Server CAR project. With this latest enhancement, any server utilization data contained in the inventory import file will be automatically transferred into the associated Server CAR project.
By automating the calculation and pre-population of average utilization in a consolidation project, Smart Import makes another substantial productivity improvement to the otherwise time consuming process of data gathering, cleaning up and inputting this data into the Server CAR consolidation planning and analysis tool
It also results in more accurate analysis. This is because the resulting derived set of Utilized Power and Heat values generated by Server CAR, taking into account the users own server utilization data, results in a more accurate representation of data center power and cooling loads.

About Server Consolidation Analysis Resource (Server CAR)
Ideas International’s (IDEAS) web-based Server CAR (Server Consolidation Analysis Resource) is an online tool that rapidly analyzes server consolidation scenarios with a key focus on deriving and quantifying footprint, energy, and carbon emissions reductions.
Server CAR incorporates IDEAS unique Relative Performance Estimate 2 (RPE2) for per-processor/core performance rankings for all current and historical servers across x86/IA/RISC architectures. Each data point is matched to a granular environmental profile for that server option. In datacenter consolidation projects, both aspects are quantified together.
