Brangayne of Orange 2009 Pinot Noir has been awarded a gold medal at the New Zealand International Wine show held in Auckland in September. The largest show in New Zealand, the International Wine show receives over 2000 entries each year from around the world. The gold medal is a huge win for the Orange winery, and this is not the first time the winery has succeeded at the show. In 2008 Brangayne’s Sauvignon Blanc was awarded a gold medal and was the only Australian wine in its class to do so. Once again the Brangayne 2009 Pinot Noir was the only Australian Pinot to be awarded a Gold Medal.

We areover the moonwith this award! We've been making Pinot for years but this is the first time we've made a rich full bodiedone so we thought we should put it up against the likes of Otago and Martinborough. I wonder what the judges thought when they found out a Pinot from Orange had made it onto the gold medal list” said General Manager and viticulturalist David Hoksins.

From the day of harvest on 24th March this fruit was stunning, the colour was striking as we crushed and subsequently fermented and hand plunged this wine on skins, giving rise to the amazing depth of colour, aromas & flavourthat this wine exhibits today - this combined with maturation in the best French oak we can lay our hands on has given rise to a wine that that is youthful & vibrant but with depth & complexity.” said Winemaker Simon Gilbert.

Brangayne of Orange 2009 Pinot Noir will be available from 23rd October.

About Brangayne of Orange:

The "Brangayne" vineyard lies on the north eastern slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Canobolas, near Orange in New South Wales, one of the highest and coldest grape districts in Australia. Experiencing snow in winter and mild summers, the cool climate offers ideal conditions for the production of premium grapes, combining generous fruit flavour, acid and length in wines of intensity and elegance. With grapes hanging on the vines often well into April they produce a subtle and highly complex character in the wines. The long ripening period and the deep, rich volcanic soil, position Brangayne as a vineyard capable of producing distinctive cool climate wines of high calibre.

The Hoskins family purchased the Brangayne property in the 1930s, and for sixty years, Edgar and Winsome Hoskins and later Don and Pamela Hoskins grew apples, pears, peaches and cherries there. Then, in 1994, Don and Pamela replaced the fruit trees with wine grapes. Son David has been running the business since 2005.
