Announcement posted by Gartner 28 Feb 2011
Run for the second time in Asia Pacific by global technology research and advisory firm Gartner, the Business Intelligence Excellence Award recognises and rewards the most successful recent BI implementations by end-user organisations.
The Gartner BI Excellence Awards attracted
submissions from 20 organisations in six countries across the Asia Pacific
region, representing industry sectors including consumer goods, retail, banking
and financial services, professional services, pharmaceuticals, education and
government.
Gartner’s BI research analysts evaluated the applicants and selected three finalists, who presented their case studies to almost 300 delegates at the Gartner Business Intelligence and Information Management Summit in Sydney last week. Delegates then voted to select the award winner.
Speaking at the Summit, Jonah Ong, IT Manager,
Application Service for the Land Transport
Authority, said the key to success was having involvement and ownership from
the business users of the data throughout the organisation, including policy
analysts and transport planners.
“We have proven that business intelligence is effective even in public administration,” said Mr Ong. “By developing a robust enterprise data management framework, we now have better use of data in planning for transport needs. For example, we can plan the construction of bus shelters and service frequency using accurate and real-time customer data. We process more than 12 million transactions per day on public transport, so that is a high volume of information.”
The solution involved a large central data
warehouse and analytics tools. Return on investment for the project includes
cost avoidance of 19 percent per annum, and manpower productivity saving of 13
percent per annum. The next step for the project will be analysis of congestion
data in the bus, rail and car network.
“It gives us the ability to think the next generation ahead in seeking sustainable solutions to everyday problems for Singaporean transport users.”
Ian Bertram, Gartner managing vice president and chair of the 2011 Gartner BI Summit, said the quality of the presentations from all three finalists was outstanding and demonstrated global best practices.
“This award program shows that successful BI can be done,” said Mr. Bertram. “Despite obvious differences in scale, industry and business strategies, the approach of all three finalists was innovative and delivered obvious results and benefits to their organisations.”
