Recent research into the attitude of tradespeople to hand protection shows a high level of awareness of the need for glove use. However, despite this, the survey showed that many people still resist wearing protective gloves on the job.
The study, undertaken by the research firm Red Letter Information, polled groups of people from a variety of trades. The survey reported a high level of awareness of the need for hand protection. Despite this awareness, many said gloves were an impediment to carrying out their tasks. Other major reasons for refusal to wear gloves on the job were quoted as lack of comfort, poor grip and fit.
After dexterity and tactility, the key requirements of tradespeople for their protective gloves were given as protective performance, comfort, durability and grip. Those surveyed wanted protection from moderate risk of cuts and abrasions, as well as wanting to look after their hands.
A third of respondents in the sample (34.9%) selected 'other' trade or labouring roles, mainly in the construction, manufacturing and personal services sectors, while 19.2% nominated general labouring and 12.9% nominated metal trades.
The balance of respondents were in automotive (9.0%), electrical (8.8%), carpentry (6.0%), landscaping (5.1%), plumbing (2.5%), masonry (1.1%) and HVAC (0.5%).
