In a first of its kind, the NRMA quizzed almost 30 couples aged 23 – 40 to find out if they knew more about their cars than their partner.
The social experiment coincided with the NRMA it! campaign, which encourages Members to make the most of the free Motoring Advice service available to all 2.3 million Members of the NRMA.
The ‘Battle of the Sexes’ style social experiment quizzed participants on a raft of car-related questions and a series of questions about their partners.
"In a result that is likely to shock sociologists for generations to come, the blokes showed that not only did they know more about their car, but they also knew more about their relationship than their partner," NRMA spokesperson said.
"This will no doubt add a new twist to the age old debate that men don’t listen!"
Over two-thirds of men showed a sound knowledge of their cars while only 15 per cent of women knew enough about the vehicle that gets them from A to B.
Interestingly, the men also led the charge when it came to relationships with 50 per cent knowing more about their relationship than their partner.
"In response to what are two pieces of equipment required to change a wheel, one of our female participants said they needed a jack and a man," NRMA spokesperson said.
"While the jack may hang around for the duration of the time you own the car, the man may not – so we encourage all Members to keep 13 11 22 (Motoring Advice Line) on hand because you never know when you might need help."
Twenty per cent of the couples showed an equal understanding when it came to cars highlighting that in some households the car is not entirely the man’s domain.
"The results showed that while there were some car enthusiasts out there, a lot of us still don’t know enough about our cars, regardless of our sex."
"Everyone needs car advice at some point in time, which is why the NRMA set up our motoring advice line to give Members the support they need."
The NRMA it! survey uncovered some quirky responses to both
the car and partner related questions and raised a few eyebrows. Some of
these include:
The women said…
- The location of the compliance plate was in the glove box with the tissues
- The essential pieces of equipment required to change a wheel are a jack and a man.
The men said…
- The location of the compliance plate was in the boot (it’s in the engine or the door frame)
- Only 12 percent knew that it was a Ford that won last year’s Bathurst 1000
- Only 15 per cent knew that regular unleaded petrol is to be phased out next year
- Almost 85 per cent knew that a new car can be serviced without having to go to the dealer
- Some of the most annoying male habits were being untidy, not making the bed, never cleaning or not listening.
Overall
- Only half (54%) of the couples surveyed knew their anniversary date.
- Only 15 per cent knew the age their partner lost their virginity
- One man said his "Pass Card" would be his wife; his wife said hers would be Steve McGarrett from TV series Hawaii Five-0
