Enterprise Ireland Announces Software & Services Trade Mission to Australia

Ireland’s Minister for Small Business to lead 40 Irish Companies in Second Consecutive Irish Trade Mission to Australia

Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government agency responsible for the development and promotion of Ireland’s indigenous business sector, today announced details of an upcoming trade & investment mission to Australia focusing on a number of key industry sectors including IT & mobility, telecommunications, financial services and e-health.

The trade mission, which will take place from the 12th – 16th September 2011, will be led by Ireland’s Minister for Small Business, John Perry and will involve more than 40 Irish technology companies.  Among the primary objectives of the week-long mission is to continue to grow the AU$1 billion value of Ireland’s technology business in Australia to date. It will also be used as an opportunity to highlight to Australian companies Ireland’s continued attractiveness as the preferred location in Europe for Foreign Direct Investment.

Commenting on the upcoming trade mission, Ireland’s Minister for Small Business, John Perry, said: “Market development is one of the key objectives of this trade mission.  This mission will enable Irish companies to investigate investment opportunities in Australia and to actively explore the potential for developing reciprocal business alliances between Irish and Australian companies.”

Paul Burfield, Director of Enterprise Ireland in ANZ added: “Ireland has a 30 year history and track record of attracting some of the world’s largest IT players to establish operations in Ireland, including Intel, HP and Microsoft. This rich and innovative legacy has resulted in the creation of a significant support industry and an explosion in Ireland’s indigenous ICT sector. Many of these companies including Curam, Daon & Fineos are now globally recognised in their own right. To provide some context, the value of Ireland’s exports of ICT exceeds the value of Australia’s exports of Iron Ore.”

Two-way trade between Australia and Ireland is worth approximately AU$1.3 billion per annum; a figure Enterprise Ireland believes has the potential to grow steadily through ongoing collaboration between both nations.

The trade mission, which will involve a series of events hosted throughout Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, will act as a platform for each Irish company to deepen their trade and commercial ties with the country and explore the true potential of setting up or expanding their operations here.  Enterprise Ireland will also work closely with a number of key industry bodies during the mission, including Austrade and the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).

Minister Perry will also take the opportunity to hold meetings with a number of Australian Government Ministers at both Federal and State levels with the view to further deepening the collaboration between Ireland & Australia.
