The Nine Network’s Big Bang Theory has topped the list of Australia’s most loved television programs, up from its 9th place position in 2010.

According to the latest Roy Morgan Single Source data (July 2010 – June 2011), Big Bang Theory boasts the highest number of Australians aged 14+ years who agree that they “really love to watch” this program.

Big Bang Theory came in just ahead of Seven Network’s Packed to Rafters, which has crept into second place – up from third place in 2009 and 2010. This is followed by Nine Network’s Two and a Half Men in third place, which has been pushed out of the number one spot after a decrease in its total number of “really love to watch” viewers, as shown in the following table:

Source: Roy Morgan Single Source, July 2008 - June 2011 (n = 57,058). 'Most loved’ is based on free-to-air TV programs about which Australians aged 14+ agree with the statement "I really love to watch".

Top Gear, NCIS and Spicks & Specks continue to rank among Australia’s most loved television programs, consistently holding on to the fourth, fifth and sixth position (respectively), for three consecutive years.

Other major changes to the top 10 most loved programs in 2011 include Network Ten’s MasterChef Australia falling from its previously-held second place position to the number seven spot, whilst Nine Network’s Underbelly and ABC’s Midsomer Murders have dropped out of the top 10 altogether. These have been replaced by new entrants Criminal Minds and How I Met Your Mother, from the Seven Network.

Whilst Big Bang Theory is equally loved by men and women, it is interesting to note that the second, third and fourth most loved programs appear to owe their rankings to either one gender or the other. In fact, apart from Big Bang Theory, NCIS and Spicks & Specks are the only other programs in the top 10 ‘most loved’ that have comparable numbers of men and women who love to watch these programs.

The following chart shows that the number one most loved television program among men is Top Gear, whilst Two and a Half Men ranks as the third most loved program for this audience.Neither of these programs, however, ranks among the top 10 most loved programs for women.

Conversely, as per the chart below, the most loved television program among women is Packed to the Rafters, followed by MasterChef Australia, yet neither of these programs ranks among the top 10 most loved programs for men.

The data shows that a proportion of Australian men continue to love watching programs such as The Simpsons, Family Guy and the cricket, whilst the crime/murder mystery genre (Bones, Criminal Minds, Midsomer Murders) and medical dramas such as Doc Martin and Grey’s Anatomy are favourites for women.

The biggest mover in the last couple of years is Big Bang Theory, which as recently as 2009 had only 2% of people agreeing that they really loved to watch the program (compared to 14% in 2011).

George Pesutto, Industry Director – Media, Roy Morgan Research says:

“There’s been quite a shake-up among the TV programs that people really love to watch, with ‘Big Bang Theory’ knocking out ‘Two and a Half Men’ as the #1 most loved TV show.

“In the latest 2011 data we’re seeing a number of programs with declining “really love to watch” numbers, particularly compared to the last couple of years.

“Since 2009 we’ve been seeing fewer men nominate some of the longstanding favourites – such as ‘The Simpsons’ and Cricket – as TV programs that they really love to watch.

“Whilst ‘Top Gear’ remains a perennial favourite among men, its stable mate ‘Top Gear Australia’ doesn’t fare so well, with less than 5% of men saying they really love to watch the Australian edition, compared to more than 17% for the British version.

“These results have implications for advertisers thinking about audience engagement and wanting to be involved with TV programs that garner loyal, engaged, committed viewers – particularly male audiences.”
