No Sour Grapes for Mum's 50th Birthday! Rare Penfolds 1962 Wine Sells for Bargain Price of $2,500

ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA - December 5, 2011 -- Two bottles of Penfolds 1962 Bin 60a, considered by influential UK magazine Decanter as one of the worlds greatest ever wines produced, were sold for $2,500 each in a deal brokered after the recent auction they had been offered in had officially closed.

"The wine did not initially sell at auction with such a cautious market and the estimate was a little higher than buyers were prepared to pay." said auctioneer Mark Wickman.

The bottles, discovered in a closet by an Adelaide couple earlier this year whilst spring cleaning, are destined to become a surprise birthday present next year for a wine loving mother. "I'm going to wait until the Penfolds re-corking clinic to taste them and have them re-corked. It will be a good opportunity to meet Peter Gago and other Penfolds enthusiasts. Next year will also be the birthday of both the bin 60A's and my mother. Perfect timing." the anonymous Sydney buyer said.

Wickman's current auction featuring mature Penfolds Grange and many other Australian iconic wines plus bottles of vintage French Champagne just in time for Christmas and New Year closes tonight and will re-open with fresh, old wine in January 2012.
