Announcement posted by Wagga Mutual Credit Union 14 Feb 2012
Among the recipients is the Wagga Wagga Rescue Squad, which has provided rescue services to the people of Wagga and surrounding districts for more than 60 years.
President Ray Willett said funds from the Community Sponsorship Account would ensure the Squad could continue to help people in emergency situations.
"It’s initiatives like the Community Sponsorship Account that allow our volunteers to deliver a professional rescue service to the local community," Mr Willett said.
"With the help of the funds provided through the Community Sponsorship Account this year we can update our vertical access equipment which includes ropes, pulleys and rescue harnesses."Since its inception in 1992 the Community Sponsorship Account has now raised more than $1.2million for the Wagga community.
Robert Keogh, Chief Executive of Wagga Mutual’s parent organisation, Community CPS Australia, said the account would soon be launched nationally.
"This account continues to be an extremely popular way for Wagga Mutual Credit Union and our members to support the local community," Mr Keogh said.
"We are now reinvigorating the account so that our members across Australia can give something back to the charities and community groups they feel strongly about."
When people open a Community Sponsorship Account they nominate a cause they would like to support from a list of participating organisations. By doing so, they are letting the credit union know where they want its sponsorship dollars to go.
At the end of each financial year Community CPS Australia calculates the average annual balance in all Community Sponsorship Accounts linked to a nominated cause and then donates the equivalent of one per cent of those balances to them.
