Tim Slade Joins Tour De Cure

Announcement posted by Tim Slade 03 May 2012

Hundreds of kilometres, tough and gruelling terrain, and plenty of lycra – but it’s all for a good cause!

Next week Lucky 7 Racing driver Tim Slade will swap his race helmet and race suit for a bicycle helmet and a pair of lycra pants, and join the team of 92 avid cyclists taking part in this year’s sixth annual Tour de Cure, which raises vital funding for cancer research.

Slade, along with V8 Supercar mates James Courtney and Jonathan Webb, will join the Tour as a guest rider in Airlie Beach on Thursday 10th May. He will cycle over 400km in three days and finish up in the beautiful town of Ingham.

Cancer research is something that is close to Slade’s heart and having lost two grandparents to the illness, Tim says the Tour is a fun, healthy and social way to show his support for a great cause.

“It’s frustrating that so many people are affected by the illness yet we still have no cure for it.

“When Mark Beretta asked if I wanted to get involved in the Tour, I jumped at the chance.

“My family, like so many others, has been affected by cancer so I am passionate about this cause and hope to raise as much money as I can to help find a cure.

“I cycle almost every day as part of my training regime, so the tour is a perfect opportunity to do something I love, with a great group of people, while raising awareness and money for cancer research.

“Tour de Cure kicks off today in Brisbane and I can’t wait to get involved next week when I join the event in Airlie Beach,” said Slade.

The Tour de Cure team have set their sights high and aim to raise $2million so they can fund 12 targeted cancer research, support and prevention projects.

Mark Beretta, Tour de Cure Cyclist and Sunrise Sports Presenter, said: “This will be my third Tour de Cure ‘Signature Tour’.”

“It is a huge commitment to be part of. Like everyone else on the team I have to fundraise over $12,000 and train for six months to be on tour.

“It not only is a personal commitment but it takes a tremendous amount of support from your own family as well.

“I know some days will be extremely tough on this coming tour but it is the people and communities we will meet (and have met) on tour that inspire all of us to keep going,” said Beretta.

About Tour de Cure

"Tour de Cure is a cycling foundation dedicated to raising funds for the fight against cancer. Since 2007 the Tour de Cure has raised in excess of $6million to help fund over 60 vital cancer research, support and prevention projects helping men, women and children.

Cancer does not discriminate. Our mission is simple – to cure cancer. We are committed to inspiring communities to take action against cancer and raise funds to help find a cure. In 2012 we have set an ambitious target of raising $2million.

Raising cancer awareness has taken on new meaning for Tour de Cure since our Co-Founder Gary Bertwistle co-authored 2 books ‘Stickman Rules – Let’s DO Well’ and ‘What I Wish I Knew About Cancer‘. These books are designed to increase kids and their parent’s knowledge of cancer and make them aware of the healthy lifestyle choices they can make to help prevent it.

The 6th Tour de Cure is from Brisbane to Mission Beach 3 – 13 May 2012.
