Using the web to drive boost business and improve income

Creating a successful business on the web is the new entrepreneurial dream. While there’s still very much a place for bricks-and-mortar business in the rapidly changing commercial landscape, those with a more serious vision for their small business look to the online world as the place in which to make their idea a successful, profitable reality.

To do this, entrepreneurs need websites. Big, small, complex or basic – they have to have a digital destination for their audience to be able to interact with them from their desk or on their mobile device while they’re out and about. Online business brings a new level of accessibility to those looking to start something new and market a fresh product or service.

But any old website isn’t going to be enough. Your website has to work given your industry, style and the image you want to project for your business. Creating a successful business website really hinges on knowing exactly what your unique selling point is and understanding exactly how you’re going to get potential customers to react and respond to the image and branding you use to broadcast that unique selling point.

Create a website that’s functional, tidy and relatively easy to use and you’re most of the way there.

But not all the way – and you won’t have covered the most important stretch of the online business journey.

This is because the best business websites aren’t just colourful, user-friendly and optimised for search engine indexing. Like a salesperson in a store, it’s not the clothes and watch that make you want to buy whatever it is they’re selling – it’s how they communicate with you and interact with you – what they say and how they say it – that compel you to make a decision one way or the other.

It’s important not to expect exceptional things from a mediocre website. If you’re serious about growing an audience and driving increased profits, you need to look consider your site as your salesperson. It’s good if it looks tidy and does its job. It’s better if it communicates effectively and genuinely engages your visitors. But it’s best if it offers your audience something none of your competitors can and truly compels them to do business with you.

How do you create a successful online business? Start with a great idea and represent it online with a great website that sets you apart from others and speaks powerfully to your customers.
