Announcement posted by Access Public Relations 11 Jul 2012
The consolidated average ratings, regional and metro, for the 20 most-watched programs on Freeview in June 2012 reached 2.52 million, an increase of 17 per cent on the previous June.
Locally-made content continued to dominate the top 20 shows on Freeview, with 17 Australian-produced programs in the top 20 in June.
The biggest growth was in the light entertainment genre, continuing the trend which has seen Australians switch on Freeview light entertainment programs in huge numbers.
For the top 10 light entertainment shows in June 2012, the combined average audience was 2.42 million, sharply up on the average 1.38 million in June 2011.
Shows new to the screen since June 2011 featured prominently in the top 10 programs for their genre.
The Voice was the outstanding performer in light entertainment in June 2012, while new shows since June last year, Revenge, Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms and New Tricks, joined favourites Downton Abbey and Packed to the Rafters in the top 10 drama rankings for June.
The reality, sport, drama, and news and current affairs genres also all performed well and made strong contributions to the growth in Freeview audiences in June.
Perennially popular reality shows The Block and Masterchef dominated the top 10 program rankings in that genre, while in sport, one of Australia’s most watched annual events, State of Origin was the stand-out player. Also in sport in June, the Tour de France made its strongest ratings start on record.
“If ever a single month shows just how much choice is available on Freeview and how much Australians love it, no-one need look further than June this year,” Freeview General Manager, Liz Ross, said.
“The growth in audiences for the top 20 programs on Freeview underscored the fact that 2012 is shaping up to be our most exciting year yet for viewers,” she said.
