Boutique WA winery becomes Australia's highest rated since 1986

Announcement posted by Jewels PR 06 Aug 2012

Larry Cherubino creates history with unprecedented ratings in 2013 James Halliday Wine Companion

The 2013 edition of James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion reveals a fourth consecutive year of stellar results for Western Australia’s Larry Cherubino Wines and positions the winery as the highest-rating producer in a single year since the inception of Halliday’s annual review in 1986.

The boutique, family-owned winery outperformed some 2,200 Australian wineries, including the biggest names in the business.

Halliday, the undisputed authority on wine in Australia, rates at 90 points or above, all 31 of Larry Cherubino’s wines submitted for review. More than half – 61 per cent – are credited with 94 Halliday points or above.

Every label within the family-owned Larry Cherubino portfolio features in the guide’s upper echelon, including Ad Hoc, The Yard, Cherubino, Pedestal and Laissez Faire.

Cherubino’s performance is unprecedented for an Australian winery, with Halliday quoted as saying: “The number of wines rated at 94 points and above (19) is far greater than those of any other producer in a single year since the inception of my annual review in 1986.”

Larry Cherubino has received high ratings in the Australian Wine Companion since the winery commenced in 2005. Its wines have consistently notched up 90-plus Halliday points in the past four editions. The winery was named one of the country’s ‘Ten Best New Wineries’ in the 2010 Australian Wine Companion, and was awarded the prestigious ‘Winery of the Year’ title in 2011.

Larry believes the latest reviews are testament to the depth of quality of WA’s Great Southern, Margaret River, Pemberton and Porongurup wine regions.

“The high scores reflect WA’s ability to produce unique wine styles across all varieties,” Larry said. “It’s a real credit to our growers, to the quality of our vineyards and to our team, from winemaking through to sales.”

About Larry Cherubino Wines:

Larry Cherubino wines was founded in 2005 by Larry and Edwina Cherubino, with the release of a single vineyard Shiraz from Frankland River in Western Australia’s Great Southern wine region. The portfolio has since grown to include five ranges of wines – Ad Hoc, The Yard, Cherubino, Pedestal and Laissez Faire.

The Cherubino’s vineyard in Frankland River is the focus for their premium wines, with fruit also sourced from Margaret River, Pemberton and Porongurup.

Larry lives by a simple winemaking philosophy. He spends most of the year focusing on vineyards and grapes, ensuring that only the best fruit ends up in the winery. This enables him to showcase regional and varietal pairings and to highlight single vineyards from around the State.

He is one of Australia’s most acclaimed winemakers, having held senior winemaking roles at BRL Hardy at Tintara in South Australia and later at Houghton in Western Australia, where his wines won literally hundreds of awards on the highly-competitive Australian and international wine show circuits.
