Powerful Website Design Ideas

Design Tips for Building a Better Online Business

Website design isn’t just about making your home page look pretty. The way you position elements on the screen will dictate the audience you attract, what you sell and for how much.

Get it wrong and you’ll be wondering why nobody is clicking through to your loyalty rewards scheme to claim their free prize.

But get it right and you’ll be on your way to a successful online business with customers who return regularly to bask in the warm glow of your handsome and friendly website.

OK, so that’s a bit over the top but you know what I mean.

So where do I start?
At the beginning. Start thinking like a customer and immerse yourself in the world of usability. Great website design should immediately attract the eye, then guide a visitor along a simple path to your point of sale. Anything that gets in the way or slows down the process is a roadblock to a purchase, so clear the clutter, simplify the message and get to the point quickly.

Here are some other factors to consider;

Clean and Consistent Wins the Race
Using lots of white space in the design of your website will make it easier to digest. It will also help to keep the focus on your content, which is where your sales pitch lives.

If you find that you have too many links on the page, consider drop down menus or fly-Outs. That way, your minimal design won’t be compromised and content may be sorted into appropriate sections.

See it in Colour
As you probably know, different colour schemes promote very different moods. Blue is safe, red is passionate, that sort of thing. Check out one of the thousands of colour charts online to establish the right approach for your business, then use those colours tastefully and consistently throughout your website design. It sounds simple, but lots of sites get it wrong.

Font of Inspiration
The font you use for your business website is very much a personal choice, but the rules for its use are not. Basically, if you use a selection of different fonts in the design process, you’ll start to look unfocused and a bit flakey. Also, if you decide on Comic Sans as your main font, get ready for the backlash from just about every designer on the planet (they don’t like it at all).

Experiencing Interactivity
Websites design is no longer a one-way street, where a person or company delivers information to an audience and that’s the end of it. These days, the more you engage with visitors the more chance you have of encouraging a sale.
