Fujitsu Wins Major Outsourcing Contract with BOC

Fujitsu Australia has won a major outsourcing contract from BOC, the leading provider of gases and related products and services in the South Pacific. The contract is worth an estimated A$33 million over five years.
The Fujitsu contract supports the BOC Webcentric vision of supplying applications and services over the web directly to the PCs of BOC employees. Instead of each employee requiring a copy of office productivity software to do tasks such as word-processing, they will be able to use such software over the web on a pay as you go basis.
Graham Smith, Managing Director, BOC Industrial and Special Products, South Pacific, said: Webcentric is a very innovative approach to buying and using information technology. We are always looking for new ways to improve our business and Webcentric offers us better performance at a reduced cost.
The user pays approach is being tested first in Australia. Eventually BOC expects to extend the approach worldwide and to achieve significant savings in the process.
Fujitsu was able to demonstrate an extensive delivery capability with agreed levels of service to support our business needs. Not only did Fujitsu represent a good cultural fit for our organisation, but its world-wide presence and resources provided the global and strategic alignment we were seeking in a business services partner, he said.

The risk of moving to such a different way of working has been minimised because service levels have been agreed with Fujitsu at the outset, and the cost is fixed and will reduce over time.
Fujitsu Australias Executive General Manager, Services, Peter McFarlane, said the BOC contract fits well with Fujitsus own direction of offering customised outsourcing arrangements with infrastructure hosting and Web-based delivery of services and applications.
Recent technology advances offer enormous potential to reduce the cost of doing business and we will work in partnership with BOC to further reduce cost through development of native Web-based applications and the introduction of new technology.
This agreement is in accord with our strategy of increasing our market share of the rapidly growing support market and creates the opportunity for Fujitsu to build a genuinely global relationship with The BOC Group over time, he said.
The IT infrastructure services are part of Fujitsus range of InfraCare services which include end user support offerings such as Contact Centre and Systems Management services, as well as Data Centre and Network services and Field services.
The solution will utilise Fujitsus extensive experience with the Citrix platform to deliver applications via a standard web browser, with expected benefits of reduced maintenance and operational costs, improved access to network resources and faster deployment of new applications.
It will take six months to complete development and for Fujitsu to start delivering the applications and services to BOC. Once this has been done and the concept is seen to work, BOC will look to extend Webcentric worldwide.
