Yelo: A New Calling App Challenges SkypeOut

Announcement posted by SafeBox Solutions Ltd. 16 Jan 2013

Launch of Yelo for iOS and Android to make cheap calls worldwide

A task as simple as making a phone call to friends and family, can become very challenging when traveling abroad, as recently discovered an Autralian woman, when she received a horror mobile phone bill of nearly $150,000 after returning from a nine-week European vacation.

Unclear data plans on 3G, and high roaming charges applied by network operators mean that many travelers are at risk of getting hit by a shock phone bill on their return home.

Fortunately, a new international calling app called Yelo has been launched today on the Apple App store and Google Play. Yelo will enable millions of users across the Android, iPhone and iPad platforms to make low cost, high quality calls to landline and mobile phone numbers in more than 200 countries.

Yelo promises to shake global communications and challenge the established leaders of international calling as it aims to become one of the most comprehensive solutions on the market for low-cost calling.

With Yelo, users will save up to over 90% compared to leading operators and service providers such as Vodafone, AT&T, T-Mobile, SkypeOut, Jajah, and Rebtel.

The cost of long distance calling has been a problem for many years within migrant communities, and an early solution came in the form of prepaid calling cards, which offered very cheap call rates to the most popular destinations. But while cheap, calling cards are also very inconvenient for the users, requiring them to type long sequences of digits and # keys every time they want to make a call.

With the widespread of smartphones, new calling services such as Viber have emerged and became popular, offering free calls between users of the same application. However, this is a big limitation as mobile users are required to call any sort of phone numbers, regardless of whether the interlocutor has a smartphone, a basic mobile phone or a fixed line.

The new application, Yelo, allows its users to make cheap calls to any phones in the world, including basic handsets and landlines. It acts as a normal phone call, which makes the service very convenient as the recipient of the call does not need to own a smartphone, or download any applications whatsoever.

The Yelo application can be downloaded for free on the Apple App store (for iPhone and iPad) and Google Play (for Android devices). Users then simple topup their Yelo account with credits and use these credits to make calls over either 3G or Wifi.

Making normal calls over WiFi has a great advantage for users in roaming situations overseas, because they can simply connect to any WiFi hot spot and then make normal calls anywhere in the world without even touching their phone bill, using only the credits they topped up in their application.

As an example, a call from Sydney to a mobile in France can cost just 4ct/min with Yelo, while the same call with SkypeOut cost 16.9ct/min.
