The BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival may have run its last race, but its 2012 Face of Caulfield, Hetty Kate, is looking forward to coming back to the neighbourhood in February to sing at the Flying Saucer Club with her swinging Irwell Street String Band.

The vintage voiced Hetty is one of Melbourne’s busiest jazz chanteuses, and when not performing here she can be found on bandstands from New York to Bangkok and Hanoi to Santiago. Gracing stages in Melbourne with jazz luminaries such as James Morrison, Steve Sedergreen and Gianni Marinucci, Hetty has appeared on eight albums in the past six years.

This of course includes Irwell Street’s second album, ‘11:60pm’, a catchy collection of classics and curios from yesteryear that is already in its second pressing and receiving airplay around the world.

Irwell Street, one of Melbourne’s favourite jazz bands, has continued to develop an enthusiastic following with gigs often standing (or dancing) room only. What fans find so endearing about this swinging combo are the influences of Hawaiian and country/folk music, and a welcome knack of steering away from the usual jazz repertoire to breathe life on little heard gems.

Formed in 2008 by vocalist Hetty Kate, and talented guitarist Sam Lemann, the quartet’s audiences are a mix of young swing dancers through to mature-aged jazz aficionados who enjoy a connection with the music of their youth.

“I was raised on a diet of show tunes and Doris Day,” says Hetty Kate.

“Some of my earliest memories involve listening to these old songs, and so singing this vintage repertoire seems very natural to me. The songs are beautiful, the music composition and poetry of the lyrics really speak to my heart. I love to share them with people.”

As well as the in-demand guitarist Sam Lemann, the band includes the familiar Flying Saucer faces of master rhythm guitar of Melbourne blues, roots and cajun royalty Andy Baylor (Honeydrippers, The Dancehall Racketeers, Cajun Combo) and double bassist and composer
Leigh Barker (The New Sheiks).

Irwell Street gigs always leave audiences with a spring in their step and a song in their heart.
When Hetty Kate performs for the jazz-loving folks at Flying Saucer Club, it’s sure to be a night
to remember.

“This is easy going jazz, as bright and sparkling as a Summer’s day. Hetty Kate’s voice overflows with a natural musicality. The music is full of invention but always comfortably familiar.”
Richard Fields – 3CR Radio Melbourne AUSTRALIA

“Hetty has the most gently seductive “little girl” voice I’ve heard since first encountering the (then!) young Ella and June Christy. And she has a masterful way with lyrics, bringing them to vibrant and exciting life as if each were an expression of her own private thoughts.”
Brian Harvey, Radio Jazz, UK – www.radiojazz.co.uk

“The happy swing of this music is gentle and enchanting – there is never a single note of irony in any of Hetty’s effortless interpretations of these old-time, all-time classic songs. This is a CD which can make any tough day sweet again.”
Bill Stine, Turntable For One, Saturday, 10:00 PM, WMNR-FM, Connecticut USA
