Superior tyre account management helps Jonesway Transport control costs while delivering high quality service

Perth, WA – Jonesway Transport is a market leader in Western Australia for oversized, specialised transportation services. The company focuses on long haul transportation of concrete-based pre-fabricated buildings from Perth, Darwin and Alice Springs to remote towns, communities and mines throughout WA, South Australia and the Northern Territory, including off-shore islands. A family-owned business, Jonesway has come a long way since its origins as a tow truck business in 1954. They operate a fleet of 32 prime movers and over 80 low loaders, tilt semis & other trailers, with a further fifteen new prime movers on order.

Jonesway’s expert staff and commitment to innovation is what sets it apart from its competitors, according to General Manager Graham Tritton. “Anyone can do the actual transportation of the building. Jonesway teams work together, using the latest technology, to separate the building, lift it and secure it on the low loader. We then transport it to site, unload and complex the building as safely and efficiently as possible.”

According to Graham, Jonesway’s biggest challenge is controlling costs while still providing a high quality service, especially the cost of labour, fuel and tyres. The first two are largely out of the company’s control, but for tyres and tyre management, Jonesway has worked with Kal Tire Australia for over fifteen years. Kal Tire provides new tyres and tyre service for all of Jonesway’s prime movers, trailers and other vehicles based in Perth. 

Graham says the effective relationship that Jonesway has with Kal Tire is the reason for the longevity of the contract. “If there’s an issue, we make a phone call and it’s taken care of. Maybe not immediately, but it’s always dealt with quickly.” He added, “They are always there for us, both from a sales and a service perspective. I can’t recall a time when we’ve said that we need to get a truck in and they couldn’t do it.” 

“Kal Tire also has a good relationship with their own suppliers so if there’s an issue with a tyre, they either deal with it or send it back to the manufacturer,” says Graham.

A unique feature of the Jonesway contract is their use of steer tyres, according to Kal Tire account manager Brent McDonald. “Because they are oversized vehicles, they frequently pull off the edge of the road to let other traffic pass. This means they go through steer tyres much faster than tyres on other positions.” Kal Tire supplies quality tyres to Jonesway, including Michelin, Kumho and Yokohama brands, and the service they require to keep their trucks safe and roadworthy when they need them.

Brent and the rest of the Kal Tire team are also willing to perform fleet inspections when Jonesway needs them, frequently on Sundays or over the holidays. Graham says the week of Christmas is the one sure time when the whole fleet will be there. “By looking at the whole fleet together, we can compare how the tyres are wearing from vehicle to vehicle,” says Brent. This information is then reported back to Jonesway to assist with the maintenance of their trucks.
