Bigcommerce Crowdsources Recruitment of Software Engineers

Announcement posted by Bigcommerce 12 Jun 2013

Sydney, Australia, 12 June 2013 - Australian e-commerce startup Bigcommerce, which makes it easy for absolutely anyone to set up and run an online store, has partnered with the Codehire Cup 2013, to unearth top engineering talent via a national coding contest.

Bigcommerce co-founder Mitchell Harper said the company intends to aggressively pursue local talent in the coming months and years, and will use the Codehire Cup to help recruit at least 20 top software engineers.

“We are determined to grow our nearly 100-strong Sydney team, and will be hunting down intelligent and dedicated code-junkies to help us build the next generation of e-commerce experiences for sellers and shoppers,” Harper said.

“Our talented engineering team in Sydney has been the driver of constant innovation in the e-commerce platform, which has laid the foundation for our explosive growth.”

Having raised $35M in venture capital to date, the Sydney-based startup is booming. At last count, Bigcommerce was powering more than 35,000 online stores worldwide, which collectively have sold almost $2 billion in goods.

Codehire is a coding community and skills testing platform, with a unique approach to unearthing top talent. Its programming contest will see over 700 coders vying for the 2013 Cup, cash, prizes, and job opportunities at Bigcommerce.

Round one kicked off on Saturday June 8th. The initial challenge is judged on speed of development, with round two kicking off on June 15th, assessed on code quality and approach. The Codehire Cup 2013 culminates in a live event on July 13th. More details can be seen here:

Additional commentary:

Mitchell Harper, co-founder, Bigcommerce:

“We’re building the world’s best, biggest and most scalable e-commerce platform that will power more than $3 billion in transactions in 2013. To do that requires amazing engineers who love solving scalability challenges, building and extending our APIs and literally creating and defining what e-commerce will mean for the next 10+ years. It’s an exciting time to be reinventing e-commerce.”

Soren Harner, VP Engineering, Bigcommerce:

“We’ve built one of the most talented engineering teams in Australia, and are aiming to continue to grow it in different, interesting ways. We’re giving Australia’s most talented engineers a reason to stay in Sydney rather than head to San Francisco or other international booming tech cities.

“We have implemented a generous employee share option plan so everyone owns part of the business. Every engineer writes code and gets involved from day one, having a real impact in helping our tens of thousands of small businesses clients around the world sell more.

“By using a coding contest to find the best talent, we’ll be able to quickly spot the engineers with the X factor -- the 5X programmers who are 5 times more productive than the average engineer. They are the polyglot master craftspeople who want to create something brilliant. More specifically, we’re looking to find great talent in a range of languages including Clojure, Ruby, CoffeeScript, and PHP.

“We want to hire 20 more engineers, and we’re confident this partnership will help us do that.”
