NICTA takes smart track to Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress in Tokyo

The breadth and depth of NICTA’s smart transport systems expertise is on display this week at the 20th Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress (ITS) in Tokyo, Japan.

Leading the mission is Rob Fitzpatrick, Director of the Infrastructure, Transport and Logistics Business Team at NICTA. “Managing fundamental infrastructure assets like roads and bridges; improving road safety and reducing congestion for commuters; improving operating environments and profitability for the freight sector – these activities are now defined by ITS,” he says. “NICTA’s work with industry and Government is developing the smart technology Australia needs to drive productivity in our transport and logistics sector.”

NICTA speakers:

  • ITS Technology Director and Board Member of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Australia, Dr Glenn Geers, will present on transformations in wireless connectivity and location-aware technologies, and their promise of bringing a sea-change in the way that transportation information will be generated and used in the future. Dr Geers’ recent book, Transportation and Information: Trends in Technology and Policy¹, illustrates the fundamental changes possible through information and communications technology in realising next generation mobility across the globe.
  • Dr Phil Kilby, Principal Optimisation Researcher and specialist in constraint programming and optimisation technologies for transport and freight networks, will share his insights in a talk entitled Freight Goods Movement – As Critical as People! Dr Kilby will also demonstrate economically attractive options for public transport during off peak periods featuring fixed bus routes between hubs, with taxis used as shuttles.
  • Dr Wei Liu, Machine Learning Researcher, will discuss new research and an evolving tool that discovers congestion patterns in traffic networks. This tool benefits traffic controllers by preventing and clearing traffic congestion in a timely manner.

Tech demos:

  • Driver Mental State Monitoring Simulator. Visitors can sit in the ‘driver’s seat’ and take a video game style challenge forcing the driver to navigate a driving route whilst also undertaking secondary tasks such as mental arithmetic and memory games.  Researchers monitor the physiological and behavioural responses of the driver with a view to recognising signatures of mental fatigue in real-time, and therefore being able to mitigate risks long before an accident occurs.
  • Incident Detection and Monitoring Tool based on Twitter will also be demonstrated.  This tool provides comprehensive information for traffic controllers and provides a more timely and accurate detection and management of road incidents.

NICTA’s deep expertise in ITS is a result of world-class research in optimisation, networks, computer vision, machine learning and software systems. NICTA delivers transformational technology to industry and government to operate ports, rail, road and air systems, for transportation supply networks and water and electricity networks.
