The performance of J.S. Bach’s “St John Passion”, conducted by Jonathan Grieves-Smith, commences at 7.30pm on Saturday, 12 April.
Leighton Jones is well known internationally as a singer, arranger and choral director. He has led the Choir of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne on eight international tours, and together they have released seven best-selling CDs on ABC Classics.
This concert also marks the 290th anniversary of the first performance of the “St John Passion”, one of the greatest musical works of all time, in Leipzig in 1724. Some of Australia’s leading vocal soloists will take part: Paul McMahon (Evangelist), Michael Leighton Jones (Jesus), Janet Todd (Soprano), Sally-Anne Russell (Alto), Richard Butler (Tenor) and Andrew Collis (Bass). The original-instrument Bach Orchestra will be led by Baroque violinist Lucinda Moon.

The Dean of Melbourne, the Very Revd Dr Andreas Loewe, will give a free pre-concert talk in the Cathedral at 6.30pm. A celebratory Evensong, conducted by Michael Leighton Jones, will also be held at St Paul’s on Sunday, 13 April at 6.00pm.
