Strong online audience growth prompts print magazine launch

The Star ObserverAustralia’s largest and longest running news publication for the LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) community launches a new monthly magazine today, to complement the recent expansion of the organisation’s digital publications.

Star Observer Monthly delivers LGBTI readers  in-depth news features, human interest stories, arts, entertainment, and lifestyle content.

The new magazine complements the rapidly expanding news and lifestyle content published daily at  www.starobserver.com.au and via social media.

Chairman of Gay and Lesbian Community Publishing, publisher of the Star Observer, Sebastian Rice,said: “The Star Observer has been the trusted source of news for the Australian LGBTI community for more than three decades, first in print and now online across our digital platforms."

“Our constantly updated news and entertainment website has a growing online and social media audience reaching more than 76,000 unique monthly visitors,with monthly pageviews up by 60%year on year."

Our readers have been telling us they want more opportunities to enjoy our lifestyle and in-depth features, and it’s this that has led us to launch Star Observer Monthly, a professionally produced print and eBook publication that showcases great journalism, that fits around our audience’s lives and provides our advertisers with new opportunities to reach the LGBTI community,”said Rice.

Founded 35 years ago,the community-owned Star Observer is a social enterprise that re-invests proceeds into supporting LGBTI charities and community initiatives.

The free Star Observer Monthly is advertiser and sponsor supported. The print edition is available at selected inner-city venues across Sydney,Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Canberra. An eBook edition,to read on mobile devices,will also be available for readers without access to a print copy.

The first issue features an exclusive chat with James Whiteside, the openly-gay principal dancer of the Australia-bound American Ballet Theatre, and an interview with Kate Carnell of beyondblue, discussing the organisation’s response to criticism from the LGBTI community.An in-depth article interviews gays and lesbians who call Australia home,but originate from countries with very mixed records in LGBTI rights.

The final edition of the weekly Star Observer newspaper was published in March 2014.
