Early Warning for Newborn Hearing Problems from PeopleSoft and Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick

Announcement posted by PeopleSoft 12 Oct 2001

Enterprise software leader PeopleSoft, and Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation announced that $10,000 raised by the software provider will be used to help purchase an impedance audiometer that will assist in diagnosing hearing disabilities in newborn babies.

The donation continues the success of a fundraising campaign kicked off by PeopleSoft last year. Money is raised via an annual Image and Awareness survey of Australian business, which enables PeopleSoft to assess its corporate image. PeopleSoft donated $100 to the Hospital for each survey that was completed by participants.

"We are delighted Australian business was so willing to throw its support behind our initiative and help the Hospital purchase this equipment. This is a successful fundraising initiative that will benefit new born babies with hearing disabilities," said Imogen Riley, Regional Marketing Manager, PeopleSoft. "I can not stress enough the reliance the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick places on financial support from the business community, and we are thrilled to be able to offer continued support to the hospital's fundraising program," Ms Riley added.

"PeopleSoft is an example of a philanthropic business. It is achieving business success whilst contributing to the community. We are proud to be able to partner with PeopleSoft to help the quality of children's lives," said Elizabeth Crundall, Chief Executive, Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation.

This year's donation from PeopleSoft will assist the Audiology Department in testing hearing in newborn babies. Recent research has found that hearing loss, not identified within the first six months of a baby's life, will have
a profound effect on the child's long term hearing. Previously it was believed that hearing problems had to be identified within 3 years to be able to rectify damage.

"It is crucial that all children are tested to identify if they have hearing loss so that treatment can commence earlier to tackle the problem, increase development and learning. The equipment, that PeopleSoft has assisted the Hospital to buy, will enable us to better diagnose problems and give children with hearing disabilities a better quality of life." Ms Crundall added.

Providing professional care for children in Sydney and throughout New South Wales, the Sydney Children's Hospital's main objective is to provide superior care for children in need and to restore their physical and emotional health without compromising their comfort or opportunity of having a bright future.

Last year the hospital admitted over 14,000 children and looked after 200,000 children through its emergency, outpatient and outreach services for illness such as cystic fibrosis, cancer, asthma and congenital diseases. It is also a referral centre for highly specialised child health problems.

The Sydney Children's Hospital Foundation is the principal fundraising body for the Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick.
