Timber Suppliers in Brisbane Say: “Take Care of Your Timber or it Won’t Take Care of You.”

Premier timber supplier, Narangba Timbers of Brisbane, reveals secrets to finishing interior timber to increase longevity and enhance appearance.
Perth, WA, 7 June 2014 - Narangba Timbers has a reputation for great prices, but they also have a strong commitment to customer service. They carry high quality timber and want to help their customers keep it looking good and performing well for as long as possible. They believe that many timber purchases can last a lifetime if the timber is properly maintained.

In a recent post on the company blog, they offered tips for applying finishes and sealers to timber to protect the timber and enhance its appearance. Here are some highlights.

Using a Sealer

Any surface with end grain exposed should always be sealed. Louvre doors and turned legs are examples of surfaces that should be sealed, but larger surfaces benefit, too. Surfaces that have been stained with a satin stain or glass stain particularly benefit from a sealer due to enhanced appearance. Part of the sealing process for unfinished wood involves the sealer filling the grain, sealing it while enhancing its appearance.

Standard Application of Interior Finishes

Narangba Timbers reminds its readers that preparation is the key factor in achieving the desired results when applying any finish. They recommend using steel wool and mineral spirits to wipe off all excess grease or oil on a finish, and wiping it clean with a cloth to finish the preparation.

Two or three coats are usually sufficient when applying an interior gloss finish. The surface should be sanded with 240 grade paper in between coats to help maintain a consistent surface.

Interior Wood Stains

Interior wood stains are recommended because of their ability to enhance the appearance of timber. They can be used to make a challenged piece of timber look great or to change the colour of a piece of timber. They are also used to strengthen the existing colour in many cases while leaving the grain intact.

Jack Kyle, owner of Narangba Timbers, knows how to care for timber and how to extend its lifespan. According to Mr Kyle, “When any piece of timber comes out of our store, we know that it is the finest available. Ultimately, though, once it is in use, as a floor, a cabinet, a louvre door or any of many uses, the timber is only as good as the care taken to keep it attractive and functional.”

Mr Kyle continued, “The fundamentals are easy and usually good enough to maintain high quality in a good piece of timber. Staining wood is a matter of personal preference; many prefer the natural look. But using a good sealer and putting a nice finish on a piece of timber will do a lot to keep it from rotting or cracking, and it will look great, too.”

Mr Kyle concluded, “Take care of your timber and it will take care of you.”
