A $30,000 fine has been issued to construction company, Hezem Pty Ltd, after they pleaded guilty to breaching the Occupational Health and Safety Act by failing to provide their employees with a safe work environment.

Inspectors told the court that the workers were in and around a large trench that had been excavated under the corner of the house. The wall of the building was also clearly showing signs of failure with a large crack running through the brickwork. The investigation found that these working conditions created an unsafe and potentially hazardous environment for the employees.

This failure was discovered after the launch of Operation SafeSite, a 12 month campaign to promote safety on construction which puts the spotlight on traffic management, public protection, mobile plant, site supervision and working in excavations and near powerlines.

Inspectors have said that the Hezem Pty Ltd investigation has highlighted the need for employers to understand their rights, obligations and responsibilities for workplace injury rehabilitation and compensation.
