Photon Energy and Yingli Solar deliver carbon reductions to Australia Post

Announcement posted by Yingli Solar 29 Jul 2014

Sydney, Australia – 29 July, 2014 – Yingli Green Energy Australia Pty Ltd*, known as “Yingli Solar”, the world’s largest solar PV module manufacturer has supplied Australia Post with a 284 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) panels through solar PV system solution provider, Photon Energy Australia.

The installation of the solar PV system at StarTrack House, Australia Post’s New South Wales Headquarters at Strawberry Hills in Sydney, was completed by Photon Energy over three months. Comprising of 1,051 Yingli Solar’s proprietary n-type silicon technology, the Yingli PANDA has an average cell efficiency of 19 percent.

The 1,051 solar panels at Australia Post are forecast to produce 370 MWh of electricity per annum; enough electricity to reduce the carbon impact of the facility by around 325 tonnes and the electricity costs by over $65,000 each year based on today’s prices.

The initiative supports Australia Post’s long-term ‘Carbon Reduction Strategy’ which aims to achieve a 25 percent reduction in their 2000 level emissions by 2020. Having identified electricity usage as one of their key contributors towards their carbon footprint, Australia Post looked towards solar PV as a way of improving the building’s 2.5 Stars NABERS energy rating to 5 Stars in the most cost effective manner.

As there was limited roof space available for the installation of a solar PV system, Photon Energy used a two pronged strategy to maximise yields.  This involved taking an innovative approach to the engineering and design of the system, and using Yingli Solar’s high efficiency PANDA modules.  PANDA’s innovative n-type silicon technology provides high energy outputs especially in low light conditions such as mornings, evenings or cloudy days.

Daman Cole, Managing Director for Yingli Green Energy in Australia said, “Solar power is important for businesses like Australia Post who are looking to reduce their reliance on grid electricity and to minimise their carbon footprint. Yingli Solar’s proprietary n-type silicon technology, known as PANDA, is ideal for maximising energy yield, especially for buildings wishing to push the envelope.”

Australia Post’s Head of Environmental Sustainability, Andrew Sellick, said, “We’re striving to become leaders in environmental sustainability, driving clean energy and efficiency initiatives across our 1,200 facilities and StarTrack House is a key example of this.”

Michael Gartner, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Photon Energy Australia said, “Solar power has become a have-to-have because it not only achieves energy efficiency targets but also reduces facility energy costs. Solar PV is now an integral part of the energy mix and Photon Energy prides itself in providing the maximum benefits of solar for its customers over the whole lifecycle.”

Yingli Solar is renowned for the high quality and energy outputs of its PV panels, resulting in lower costs long term. As the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, Yingli Solar has delivered more than 30 million panels or the equivalent of over 9 gigawatts of solar energy to homes, businesses and utilities in more than 50 countries.
