Imaginations Take Flight for Trop Jr 2014

Announcement posted by Tropfest 13 Aug 2014

After a record-breaking number of entries in 2013, the world’s largest short film festival for kids by kids is officially open, with Trop Jr giving young filmmakers the chance to showcase their stories at the short film competition this December.

This year’s Trop Jr Signature Item is “FLY”, and it’s safe to say it might inspire some of the most exciting films Trop Jr has ever seen
“This year’s TSI has already had imaginations flying,” said Michael Laverty, Tropfest Managing Director. “It’s going to make for a really fun festival. The talent and creativity from the next generation of storytellers always amazes me.”

Tropfest Jr 2013 finalist, Jack Dignan, returns with a new film for the 2014 competition. Entering for the third time, Jack is proof of the incredible talent and determination that these young filmmakers possess. His last year’s entry Pretty Normal Activity was a dark parody of horror hit Paranormal Activity, using the “found footage” technique to create a sophisticated horror short, which propelled him into the finals.

Inspired by Tim Burton and Quentin Tarantino, Dignan was lucky enough to meet Burton in Melbourne, which he says is the “highlight of his life” so far. This year his entry is set as a modern day Shakespearean comedy, telling the story of two brothers and their quarrel with some rather thumb-biting news. Jack has directed, produced, written and edited his entry, with the help of his two best friends.

Inspired? Trop Jr is accepting entries until October 2, so get cracking!  The finalist films will screen to thousands of short film fans in Centennial Park on December 7, 2014.

Jenny Buckland, CEO of the Australian Children’s Television Foundation, Trop Jr’s generous Presenting Partner, encourages all kids with a passion for film to get out there and start making a film for the competition.

“Trop Jr is providing a wonderful chance for our youngest film makers to acquire experience, exposure and most importantly an audience for their films.  The ACTF is hoping that as many kids as possible will take advantage of this opportunity and make their best film ever this year.”” she says.

Make sure you submit your film to the Festival before October 2, 2014. Remember, your film must include the TSI, be no longer than seven minutes and Trop Jr must be your film’s world premiere.

You can read more about the guidelines at tropjr.com – and watch all the entries from last year’s finalists for inspiration.

Trop Jr will take place at Centennial Park on December 7, 2014.

ACTF: Presenting Partner of Trop Jr
The Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) is committed to providing Australian children with entertaining media made especially for them, which makes an enduring contribution to their cultural and educational experience.  We believe that children deserve interactive experiences that encourage them to engage with content, with each other and the world around them and we recognize that many children are accomplished creators of their own media.  By presenting Trop Jr, the ACTF is providing children with a platform to showcase their creativity and talent, and to contribute their own stories “for kids, by kids”.
