TINTILLA TAKES TOP POINTS FOR ITS SEMILLON

Since 2008 James Halliday has regarded the Hunter Valley’s Tintilla Estate worthy of his sought after 5 star rating, and last night it got one better for Tintilla with a revered 97 rating (equal highest score for any Semillon in the newly released 2015 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion) for its Semillon. Tintilla now also has a red 5 star rating.

Tintilla Estate is a family owned and operated 25 acre vineyard in the heart of Pokolbin, in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley wine region. The vineyard is centered on a tributary of the Rothbury creek, in an area with soils renowned for Semillon. In fact this Rothbury Creek bed is responsible for producing James Halliday’s top two 97 point Semillons!

Having cleared and planted the vineyard with traditional Semillon and Shiraz varieties over 20 years ago they have consistently won awards for their single vineyard wines.

They take great pride in the fact they not only grow the grapes but also make the wines on their property. While this is a fairly unique operation in this day and age it gives them greater control in the quest for excellence.

Careful attention in the vineyard by winemaker James Lusby also helps produce healthy grapes with optimal ripeness and true varietal character.  Tintilla has low yielding vines that produce rich and concentrated fruit with the acidity and tannins that lead to longevity with a softness derived from the Hunter terroir.

The 2006 Tintilla “Angus” Hunter Valley Semillon (RRP $40) 97 points, like all Tintilla Estate wines, is 100% estate grown. The well-drained creek bed soil, home to the Semillon vineyard, produces wines with great longevity, and this wine is no stranger to longevity. Handpicked, early harvested and cool fermented, this wine was bottled early to retain the freshness of the primary fruit which is still evident today.

The 2012 Tintilla “Angus” Hunter Valley Semillon (RRP $28) 95 points, has a fine pedigree, made in almost mirror like process to the coveted 2006 from the same well drained, creek-bed vineyard on the Tintilla Estate. This clean and lean 10 percenter is destined to age in the same vein as its sibling, and Halliday has recently adorned it with 95 points in its current form.
