Manager of childcare centres in Perth reveals why the kitchen may be the best place outside of their centre for a child to learn while playing.
Perth, WA, 10 September 2014 - At Cuddles Childcare Centres, their motto is “Learning Through Play.” The staff at Cuddles Childcare Centres takes their motto very seriously and have turned it into more of a mission statement. One of the new programs at Cuddles Childcare Centres is called “Shake ‘n’ Bake,” in which children help cook food and eat it when it is finished.
According to Operations Manager Michelle Novatscou, the program is so beneficial that she recommends it as a home strategy for helping a child learn through play.
Kitchen Time is Quality Time
When a parent spends time in the kitchen, cooking with their child, it is the best of quality time. It helps the child bond with the parent and exposes them to plenty of things they wouldn’t normally get to see or do.
Self Esteem Rises
When a child gets to be part of a completed project in the kitchen such as a batch of cookies, they feel a better sense of self esteem because they made something they are going to eat.
A Sense of Adventure
If your child cooks food they don’t like, they are more willing to try it and maybe eat it due to the fact that it was they who cooked it.
Math Skills
To execute a recipe, one must be handy with math. Cooking helps develop a lot of different skills relating to math. It teaches fractions, as in ½ of a teaspoon. It teaches counting, as in three cups of water. It teaches geometry, such as the dimensions of a baking pan. It also teaches temperatures such as the boiling point of water.
Reading Skills
If your child has a genuine interest in food, it will enhance their reading skills. You can have them do as much of the reading as possible, but keep your expectations realistic. If your child learns to read a recipe all the way through and follow instructions, it is a great achievement.
Chemistry
The mixing and cooking of many recipes teaches children a lot about chemistry. Reactions to heat and cold are basic building blocks in chemistry. How foods mix together is another.
Fine Motor Skills
Cooking involves a lot of subtle movements that help children develop fine motor skills.
Putting it all Together
According to Ms Novatscou, cooking is one of the best ways for a child to have fun and learn while playing in a child care centre or at home:
“We give children a lot of opportunities to learn while playing and our Shake ‘n’ Bake program is one of the best. The children have a lot of fun and they learn valuable skills while helping us cook. Shake ‘n’ Bake is so successful that we tell parents to try it at home.”
Cuddles Childcare Centres live by their motto, “learning through play.” They have three locations in the Perth area and they provide numerous play opportunities for preschoolers.
