TROP JR ALLOWS AN EXTRA WEEK FOR ENTRIES TO FLY IN

Announcement posted by Tropfest 11 Sep 2014

FOUR WEEKS LEFT FOR KIDS TO GET FILMS FINISHED
Tiny Tarantinos and small-scale Spielbergs have only four weeks left to get their submissions into this year’s Trop Jr. The entry deadline has been extended by one week and the cut-off for entries is now 6pm on Thursday 9 October, 2014.

With the September school holidays in near sight, this gives kids a good chance to put finishing touches on their imaginative short films, somehow incorporating this year’s Tropfest Signature Item (TSI): ‘FLY’.

Ben McCarthy of Brooklyn, NSW won the February 2013 Trop Jr with his heartwarming claymation film Bumper about a frog that can’t jump. The film then went on to win best animation at the Brooklyn Film Festival in New York; a huge achievement given the award was open to adults as well as children.

The talented animator is back with another entry into this year’s festival called One Cranky Seagull, which shows how we can deal with ‘cranky seagulls’ – people who push others around and want more than their fair share.

Entering Trop Jr for his first time is Mitchell Burn, who was part of a group of eight kids who worked together to make Don’t Do It Man, a film about sport.

“Our movie explores bad sportsmanship by professional sportsmen such as cricketers, swimmers, cyclists, soccer players and athletes. We show the measures they sometimes take to win and how it is linked to money. We reveal how bad role models influence kids and what kids should do instead,” Burn said.

Since the competition opened, entries from talented kids all over Australia have poured in – from the ACT, to Mindarie and Perth in WA, and Ivanhoe in Victoria.

“The entrants to Trop Jr this year have really let their imaginations fly free,” said Henry Kalaf, Festival Manager. “There have been some really clever and unique interpretations of the TSI –birds, planes, superheroes, you name it! Trop Jr makes it clear that the future of the Australian film industry is in good hands with our next generation of young filmmakers.”

So, miniature movie-makers, remember to get your short films submitted to Trop Jr before October 9.

Sixteen lucky finalist films will screen to thousands of short film fans at a free event in Sydney’s Centennial Park on December 7, 2014.

This will be Trop Jr’s seventh year and is expected to be the competition’s biggest yet, with some huge cash prizes up for grabs. Trop Jr is a rare launching pad for young filmmakers and a one-of-a-kind chance for kids to show off their sky-high imaginations and let their cinematic talents take flight.

Trop Jr is presented by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF).
