THEY ARE MORE THAN JUST A NAME

The project, known as ‘More than Just a Name’ saw the year five students at Five Dock Public School researching the history of soldiers from the area who served in WW1.

The six-week project involved 90 students, researching 27 soldiers who worked at the Australian Gas Light Company in Mortlake.  The students used iMovie on the City of Canada Bay Libraries’ portable multimedia studio to create a two-minute video, acknowledging the service and sacrifice of these soldiers.

“It is important that our future generations remember the sacrifice these soldiers took for our country and educating our youth is one way to ensure their memory lives on,” Mayor Angelo Tsirekas said.

The students found the project educational and inspirational.

“This project has really encouraged me to think about the history of my country. It has been really exciting and fun,” said Benjamin, a year five student.

Another student, Maleeka followed sentiment saying “I’ve really enjoyed this project a lot. I like learning about the history of our country and researching brave Aussies. It’s very interesting.”

Mayor Angelo Tsirekas will be screening the videos and presenting certificates to the students on Thursday, 16 October at 3.15pm at Five Dock Library.

The videos will be uploaded on our Project Y City of Canada Bay YouTube channel from mid-October.

Two other local schools will also take part in the project, with our library teams currently working with year five and six students from Concord Public School. They will start working with year nine history students from Concord High School in term four.

The final collection will consist of 56 videos and will be launched next year during the Centenary of ANZAC 2015.
