Mortgage Broker in Rockingham Cautions Readers about Property Scams

Announcement posted by Smartline Rockingham 08 Oct 2014

Mortgage brokers from the firm Smartline Rockingham reveal common scammer techniques and how to avoid being victimised by them.
Rockingham, WA, 8 October 2014 - In an age of electronic scrutiny, many find it difficult to believe that scammers are even more active than at any time in our history. While it may seem that increased electronic communication would make it more difficult for scammers to get away with their crimes, the Internet era has had the opposite effect: criminal activity is estimated to be at an all time high.

Property scammers are very prolific, but so are other scammers who remove sizeable amounts of money from unsuspecting Australians.

Many Different Techniques

Scammers employ many different techniques to fool the public into parting with their hard-earned money. The best way to avoid being scammed is to remember an old adage: “If it sounds too good to be true, it’s too good to be true.” Here are a few of the techniques that are used for property scams and a host of other scams.

Telemarketing

Scammers hire telemarketers because they don’t have to pay them a lot. In addition, that payment is usually a commission, ensuring that the telemarketers will work very hard and not accept “no” for an answer. The telemarketers usually think they are working for a legitimate firm and have no idea they are offering a scam. This makes it more believable to the person being scammed.

Email

Email is a very efficient way to initiate contact for a scam. It costs virtually nothing to send and one message can be sent to thousands of people. Emails will often look like they were sent by popular companies.

Investment Seminars

Usually, the scammers offer a free seminar to tell about an “opportunity.” The free seminar is usually an elaborate sales pitch for either an “investment opportunity” or an expensive seminar. Either way, a lot of money usually changes hands at the end of the “free” seminar.

Legitimate Company Names

Often, scammers will pretend to be from legitimate companies that you will recognise. This causes people to trust them and not suspect a scam.

How to Keep from Being Scammed

Justin Smith is the Principal Broker for Smartline Rockingham. He has years of experience in the financial field and as a mortgage broker. Mr Smith has salient advice to help keep scammers at bay. According to Mr Smith, “There are some safeguards that you should always take. The first one is to never listen to anyone contacting you and asking for your money, but I know it’s not always that easy. Scammers know exactly what buttons to push and how to push them.”

Mr Smith concluded, “If you do listen to an offer from someone who says he works for a large company or for your bank, say you’ll call them later. Then, call the company they say they are representing and ask if they work there. Doing your due diligence like that will save you a lot of money ”
