Community services help build dreams in Browns Plains

Announcement posted by FSG Australia 20 Oct 2014

The Spot to be for Queensland Communities

FSG Australia (FSGA) and The Spot Community Services are officially opening their doors together on 22nd October. With the aim of expanding community services and social enterprise facilities, they will bring substantial and increased benefit to Browns Plains and its surrounding communities. People will also have the opportunity to meet with fully trained Dreamweavers who will work alongside members of the community to assist with life aspirations. Logan City Councillor, Cherie Daley will be cutting the ribbon to officiate the exciting community launch.

The Spot itself is a state of the art facility based in Sandstone Place, Parkinson. It will be the first office and facility that established not for profit organisation FSGA has had in the region.

The community facility will be home to numerous social enterprises such as the onsite Café, a unique all abilities rock climbing wall, and venue hire including a dance studio, recording studio, training rooms and auditoriums. There are also opportunities to participate in outdoor activities including kayaking and outdoor climbing. It is hoped that individuals, schools, local groups, and businesses will take full advantage of the impressive array of services that will generate funds to go back into local communities.

Vicki Batten, Chief Executive at FSGA said the social enterprises would provide enormous opportunities to the surrounding communities. “Many of the enterprises will be run by FSGA participants and will raise funds for FSGA’s unfunded programs for disadvantaged communities. We believe that these expanding services will contribute towards our aims of social justice and growth for all. Our Dreamweavers will be just one of the exciting new additions to The Spot”.

Eligible members of the community will be able to meet with a Dreamweaver, who will be there to help facilitate positive life choices. Experienced Dreamweavers will discuss individuals’ life aspirations and then co-ordinate between the families and the services available, to help them achieve their goals or dreams. This may include addressing areas such as living a more independent life, being engaged in social activities, or looking at potential employment avenues.

An onsite Psychologist is available for consultation and the existing Family Unit program will continue to provide an early intervention and prevention service to families with children aged 0-18. The service assists families in building strong, connected relationships through education on parenting skills, healthy relationships, self-control, reaction management, and empowerment.

The official launch takes place on FSGA’s ‘Orange Wednesday’ and will therefore be orange themed to represent social justice for all. The Spot is certainly the place to be, and anyone using the facilities will be contributing towards healthier and happier communities.

The Spot Community Services

The Spot Community Services started in 1996 as a youth drop-in center run by five volunteers in an empty warehouse in Browns Plains. Originally The Spot was an initiative of Southside Community Church, which was later registered as a not-for-profit company and relocated to the Church on The Spot.
