Templeberg Villa to Welcome Its Second Australian Writer in Residence to Sri Lanka

Announcement posted by Templeberg Villa 03 Nov 2014

The month of November will see Templeberg Villa in Sri Lanka throw open its doors to Lucy Nelson as the organisation’s newest writer-in-residence

bout

A member of Canberra’s literary community, Nelson will take up her position as writer-in-residence between 3 and 30 November 2014.

Nelson will use her time there to work on a novel-length manuscript in progress set within rural Sri Lanka about secrets that make slaves of their keepers. "There is nothing that could more usefully serve the development of my project than being plunged into its spicy, sticky setting," she said.

"Through this project, I am attempting to capture the evocative elements of Sri Lankan culture, and to use this landscape of quiet constant rhythms as a complementary setting to a narrative that is both gripping and lingering," she explains.

Nelson will be exploring various parts of the Sri Lanka over the coming weeks so that she can research the setting for her book and meet various local Sri Lankans who will be the inspiration for the books characters. Some of the locations she is likely to visit include: Mirissa, Weligama, Matara, Bentota and the capital Colombo.

Christopher Shields, Templeberg Villa Owner said "we are delighted to have Lucy stay with us while she pens her first book. Our writers-in-residence program literally is about allowing a writer to sit down and write in an ideal historic jungle setting. It’s about letting Lucy take time out of her busy life to make writing a daily pleasure".

Nelson is available for telephone interviews and supporting images are available upon request. Please call +61481160031 to arrange an interview or request supporting images.
