THE first Inspiring Women Calendar aims to raise $20,000 for the Animal Welfare League of Qld (AWLQ) to re-home 40 pets when it is officially launched on November 14 at the Urban Paradise Gallery in Surfers Paradise.

Calendar founder Karen Low, of Inspiring Change Now, said the idea came to her ‘within five seconds’ at an Inspiring Women of the Gold Coast event in May this year.

“I’m passionate about animals, the environment, supporting people to achieve their goals, making a positive, sustainable difference and I’ve always wanted to be body painted!” Ms Low said.

“It’s about inspiring women who are community minded and supporting animals.”

The calendar features women body painted by artist Robyn Janetzki as animals to raise funds for animals and most feature in the month of their birthdays. They include for January - Aldwyn Altuney (lion); February - Trudy Vesotsky (peacock); March - Donna Fisher (weedy seadragon); April - Jo Kane (bilby); May - Julie Kay (golden retriever); June - Annette Spanski (rainbow lorikeet); July - Kobe Steele (orangutan); August - Ro London (sea turtle); September – Karen Low (tiger); October - Kerry Fitzgibbon (southern corroboree frog); November - Simone Sleep (lizard) and December - Taflyn Fiola (sugar glider). The cover photo is model Alana Nicholls, who was painted as a butterfly.

Ms Low said the AWLQ cared for about 10,000 stray and abandoned animals annually from south-east Queensland.

“They receive no government funding for welfare work, relying predominantly on the community for support,” she said.

“The AWLQ cannot continue its welfare work, caring for homeless animals without the financial support of the community.  The direct costs involved in re-homing each animal are about $500.”

She said the charity fundraising project was important to support animals and raise awareness for amazing organisations and people within the community, who often gave so much to others without acknowledgement or recognition.

“The Inspiring Women Calendar 2015 acknowledges inspiring women supporting the welfare and humane treatment of animals and pets that need re-homing,” she said.

“I plan to continue releasing a calendar each year, supporting a charity or community organisation, as animals, community and making a difference are important to me and close to my heart.”

The calendar launch on Friday, November 14, will be at the Urban Paradise Gallery, in Piazza building, 3221 Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Surfers Paradise, from 7-10pm. Entry is $25, which includes a calendar, drink on arrival, nibbles, art auction, live body painting, laser light show, music and raffles.
