Fujitsu and Horizon Power Partner in Indigenous Student Traineeships

Perth, 18 December 2014. Ashlyn Hassett, from the Kimberley community of Kalumburu and a Year 11 student at the Presbyterian Ladies College (PLC) in Peppermint Grove, has received a 'Student Work Traineeship Program' completion certificate from Fujitsu.
The success of this innovative Student Traineeship was ensured by a four-way partnership. The overall program coordination was conducted by SMYL Community Services; PLC provided the flexibility and time for Ashlyn to participate in the program; Fujitsu and Horizon Power, a company supporting Aboriginal employment initiatives, aligned the work experience to meet the structured objectives of her traineeship.
Ashlyn undertook a two week induction at the beginning of the year and then, while juggling her school studies, spent one day a week at Fujitsu working as part of the support desk team allocated to Horizon Power’s managed ICT services contract.
Key to the quality of Ashlyn’s traineeship was her introduction to Fujitsu’s service culture. At the heart of its Foundation of Service program is the ROC - Responsiveness, Ownership and Communication – framework to ensure Fujitsu consistently exceeds customer expectations.
Fujitsu’s WA Service Desk Manager Warren Brickett said: “Over the year, Ashlyn truly became part of our team. The most significant thing about the program is its focus on service and communication. With her new skills Ashlyn has a confidence she can take into any career she wishes to pursue.”
The Horizon Power and Fujitsu collaboration is set to continue opening the doors for Aboriginal teenagers to experience ICT and potentially consider it as a future career.

As part of our reciprocal loyalty to them, we’re committed to improving employment prospects for Aboriginal youth in regional and remote areas of our state.
