Adelaide-born Executive Chef and San Remo brand ambassador, Adam Swanson, has been announced as Young Achiever of the Year by Restaurant & Catering Australia at a gala dinner held in Parliament House, Canberra on Tuesday 3rd March.

This is the latest accolade for the restaurant owner, who began his culinary career when he was 17-years old, before establishing Zucca Greek Mezze at Holdfast Shores in Adelaide’s suburban beach tourist district in his mid-twenties.

Under his guidance, it was awarded the title of ‘Best Mediterranean Restaurant’ for three consecutive years, and won ‘Best Greek Restaurant’ in the South Australian Restaurant and Catering Association Awards in 2009.

Mr Swanson said he was humbled to have been nominated for this prestigious award, and honoured at being announced as the national Young Achiever of the Year award winner.

“No one goes to work looking for recognition, but it is uplifting when an accolade of this calibre comes along, and you are recognised by peers and the broader industry for your passion and commitment to food and the industry,” Mr Swanson said.

“For me, cooking modern European cuisine while respecting generations of tradition is important, and it has been amazing to have recently returned from a pilgrimage across Italy to learn more about the old ways of pasta culture and bring elements of that into my own style,” he said.

“I have been very fortunate to turn my passion for food into a career that has taken me around the world, and this award would not be possible without the support of my wife Betty and my two amazing children Louis and Alyssa.”

Restaurant and Catering Australia (R&CA) CEO, Mr John Hart offered his congratulations on the well-deserved accolade.

“Adam has done a great deal to raise awareness and advance the public’s knowledge of food through regular guest appearances on Network Ten’s Ready Steady Cook, as well as Justine Schofield’s Everyday Gourmet, Good Chef, Bad Chef and Channel Seven’s Out of the Blue,” Mr Hart said.

“He has been a consistently strong contributor to the restaurant and catering industry as a highly-successful restauranteur and in his role as a San Remo brand ambassador, and serves as a role model and inspiration for other young chefs with a driving passion to succeed,” he said.

The annual Young Achiever of the Year award is coordinated by R&CA, which is the national association that leads and represents the interests of the 35,000 restaurants and catering businesses across Australia.

Each year, R&CA calls for nominations for state Lifetime Achievers and a National Young Achiever every year with the Lifetime Achievers being announced at the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards for Excellence ceremonies across the country.
