International Nappy Changing Guinness World Record Event in Melbourne 18 April 2015

Announcement posted by Australian Nappy Association 19 Mar 2015

Change a nappy and change the world!
Every day in Australia 5.6 million disposable nappies enter our landfills, and disposable nappies account for an average of one third of household rubbish for a family with one child under 2 years. The financial cost for families is also considerable. A child uses up to 6,000 nappies by the time they are toilet trained, costing thousands of dollars - per baby.

The Australian Nappy Association is hosting the Melbourne event of a global Guinness World Record challenge - the Great Cloth Diaper Change - a community event involving over 300 locations across 20+ countries.  The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the environmental and financial benefits of reusable nappies and to demonstrate they are a viable alternative to disposables for parents who want a choice.

Cloth nappies have been making a comeback over the last few years, with Australian businesses leading the world in innovation and design of modern reusable nappy styles. Today's cloth nappies are easy to use and care for, and according to CHOICE Magazine's nappy survey, 18% of their respondents now use cloth nappies at least some of the time as awareness of the benefits of reusable nappies grows. The University of Queensland's 2009 Life Cycle Study that determined cloth nappies use less energy and raw materials to produce and use than disposable nappies, used no more water (even taking into account the washing) and produced much less waste is more reason for environmentally conscious parents to consider alternatives to disposable nappies.

Melbourne parents have started registering for the Great Cloth Diaper Change at Edinburgh Gardens Community Room in Fitzroy North on Saturday 18 April joining over 10,000 babies around the world being changed into cloth nappies on the same day. Best selling author and parenting educator, Pinky McKay, will be taking part in the event as an official witness for Guinness World Records. The aim is to smash last year's record of 8,459 nappies changed around the world, and to also bring parents together as a community.
