Timber Supplier in Brisbane Reminds Consumers: “Everyone Benefits from Forest Conservation.”

Announcement posted by Narangba Timbers 01 Apr 2015

Narangba Timbers states a case for conservation and ethical sourcing by timber suppliers in Brisbane and across Australia.
Brisbane, QLD, 01 April 2015 - Climate change has become international news over the last few years. Recently, it was found that the ice caps in Antarctica are melting at a much faster rate than was previously reported. As many as 85% of Australians live in coastal zones.

The Possible Cost of Inaction
A rise of 1.1 metres, which was predicted by 2100 using the old rate of melting ice, was estimated to have the potential to ruin at least $300 billion worth of property in Australia at today’s prices. Australia’s Climate Commission estimated that, for example, Brisbane suburbs such as Albion and Windsor could end up “completely under water.” Some are now estimating that if nothing is done about climate change, 1.1 metres may turn out to be a conservative estimate.

How Forest Conservation Helps

Scientists around the globe all place the blame for climate change on non-sustainable amounts of “greenhouse gases” being dumped into our atmosphere. Greenhouse gases turn into CO2 and trap heat in our atmosphere. The measurement of greenhouse gases produced is known as the “carbon footprint.”

Ethically-sourced timber leaves a negative carbon footprint. It actually helps the environment. When a tree in its growth cycle “breathes,” it takes carbon from the environment and stores it as timber. The oxygen is released back into the environment. When trees are forested and harvested in a responsible manner on a timber plantation, they are allowed to grow through their peak growing years.

Then, they are cut down for timber and replaced by planting new trees. These new trees are planted with optimal spacing to encourage the fastest and most efficient possible growth. The new trees take more carbon from the environment and the cycle starts over.

Forest conservation ensures that there will be plenty of trees for future generations of Australians.

Why Narangba Timbers Advocates Responsible Forestry

Jack Kyle is the owner of Narangba Timbers. They are one of the biggest timber suppliers in Brisbane. According to Mr Kyle: “We are committed to responsible forestry and to conservation of our natural resources. When the South-East Queensland Forest Agreement (SEQFA)was signed in 1999, it produced a lot of benefits for our area, Queensland and all of Australia.”

Mr Kyle continued: “SEQFA came at a time when it was sorely needed. Unethical timber suppliers were doing whatever they wanted to our native forestland and it wasn’t pretty. Under SEQFA, conservation reserves immediately doubled. It was agreed that by 2025, all of the native forests would be reserved.”

Mr Kyle concluded, “We only use sustainably sourced timber. Thanks to SEQFA, it’s a lot easier to know that any timber we get from Australia has been ethically sourced. Nobody knows what the future holds for global warming, but we are always happy to contribute to the solution instead of being part of the problem.”

Narangba Timbers are one of the most trusted timber suppliers in Brisbane. They are a family business of three generations, first opening in 1972.
