Easter School Holiday Activities on a Budget

Announcement posted by Laboratories Credit Union 01 Apr 2015

Here are some of our favourite School Holiday activities that won’t hurt your budget!

The Easter School holidays are about to start and we know this can be an expensive time for parents. Not to worry there are still plenty of free and affordable activities that the kids can do either at home or in your local community. Here are some of our favourite School Holiday activities that won’t hurt your budget!

Visit the local park

Make the most of your local park it’s there for you and your family to use and enjoy. Why not organise a picnic and head to your local park for some fresh air and running around. If your kids are old enough you may be lucky enough to sit back and enjoy a book while they are busy playing. If bike riding or rollerblading is their thing you can take them to the rollerblading/biking track at Olympic park with no entry fees. Or if they enjoy bushwalking and exploring you can head out to one of the many national parks in NSW with entry fees ranging from $0 - $11 for park entry.  Make sure to take some snacks, water and sun protection when heading out to the park.

Baking Easter treats

It’s the perfect holiday occasion to bake some Hot Cross buns. There are plenty of easy to bake hot cross bun recipes online. You can always add your own touch by putting chocolate chips instead of raisins or by adding your kid’s favourite icing on top. If they are not a fan of hot Cross buns why not bake some Easter cupcakes or another treat together.

Easter egg hunts

Hide some Easter eggs around the house or yard and send the kids on a treasure hunt. The child who finds the most eggs will be the winner. Remember to give a helping hand to the younger kids who may be upset if the older kids find all the chocolate.

If you want to go all out you can write some clues and create an Easter egg treasure map with a big prize at the end. Send them on a little adventure by putting smaller eggs along the way. Be creative!

Rend DVD’s

Going to the movies these days can end up being very costly. Every year the prices seem to be going up and even the prices for snacks is ridiculous. For 2 kids and an adult it’s easy to spend over $50 each time. Renting DVD’s can be just as fun in the comfort of your own home. Make some popcorn and rent out some classic Easter movies from the local video store. These days everything is digital so you could even find the latest movies online. One option is to rent or buy movies on iTunes and watch it on your laptop. If your TV has the option to connect your laptop to your TV they can have the full screen experience.

Do some gardening with the kids

Kids love getting their hands dirty and creating things so gardening is a great interactive and engaging activity these holidays. Planting a vegetable garden with your kids is a great way to teach them about fresh foods. If you let them plant it themselves and get them to water it every day when the vegetables start to grow they will enjoy seeing their efforts pay off and value vegetables more. They will also enjoy eating their home grown veggies that they created.

Arts & crafts day

Have an Easter arts and crafts day. Remember you don’t need to go to the store to buy fancy arts and craft materials just use what you have at home. Be creative with the art supplies you can even ask them to save their Easter egg rappers and create an Easter artwork with the rappers. To get into the Easter spirit you can let them decorate their room with their Easter artworks if you like.

Kid’s bedroom clean out/makeover

The school holidays are a great time to clean out and redecorate the kid’s bedrooms. Donate outgrown clothes and unwanted toys to charity. If you have time why not makeover the kids rooms. It can be as simple as adding a feature wall which the kids can help paint and decorate. You can buy paint and rollers at Bunnings for a very reasonable price. It’s always nice to start the school term off with a fresh new start.

Check out the local library

Did you know that during the school holidays most local libraries have special school holiday activities for the kids? Check out your local library or the local council website to find out what Easter activities might be happening. It is usually free and inexpensive.

Check out what’s happening at your local shopping centre

During Easter Holidays most Shopping centres host Easter activities for the kids. It’s worthwhile to have a look and see if anything is happening. You can find out what’s happening at your local shopping centre by simply visiting their website or asking at the concierge desk at the shopping centre.

Explore the Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum offers fun and educational programs for the kids these school holidays at great value. A day at the Museum can cost as low as $10. Check out their website to find out what’s on over these holidays.

Take a tour around your city.

Taking your kids on local tours in your own city is a great way to learn more about the culture and history of your own city. There are plenty of organised tours at historical and cultural sites that they could choose from. If you are brave enough you can play tour guide and take them on your very own tour. You will be amazed by what you learn about your own city as well.

Hope these Easter holiday activity ideas will help you organise a fun filled holiday with your kids without breaking the budget. Remember to always treasure these moments you get with your kids as one day it will be a thing of the past. Wishing you all a Happy Easter!
