Announcement posted by Narangba Timbers 27 Apr 2015

Timber flooring supplier in Brisbane reveals important factors when buying timber for a flooring project.
Brisbane, QLD, 27 April 2015 - Timber flooring is considered by many to be a mainstay in the Brisbane area and Narangba Timbers has played a major role. Narangba Timbers has supplied timber products such as flooring to the Brisbane area since 1972 and they take a lot of pride in their customer service, their knowledge and their experience with working with timber flooring.

Recently, on their company blog, Narangba Timbers published a no-frills, easy on the eyes guide to the basics of timber flooring. They like to provide their customers with information whenever possible because they like it when people know the basics.

When customers already know a lot about any product, customer service personnel can spend more time answering questions that are about a specific project or situation. This benefits the customer because they are asking more educated questions and are more likely to have a positive outcome with their project.

Basics of Timber Flooring

The basic material for timber flooring is tongue and groove hardwood, which is built on top of bearers and joists. Hardwoods are rated on a hardness scale called the Janka rating. Ironbark is the hardest of the popular timbers with a rating of 14 while Spotted Gum comes in at 11 and Blackbutt has a 9.1 rating. They note that all hardwoods are hard, regardless of rating.

Pine is not rated as a hardwood, but is still hard enough to serve as a floor, especially if built on top of a subflooring. The main benefit of pine is that it is very easily worked, saving a lot of time for DIYers and professionals alike.

Timber flooring is available in three basic grades: select, standard and rustic. Narangba Timbers does not carry rustic, though, because they don’t believe in it as a high quality product. The ratings are based upon the visible characteristics in the timber, such as veins, burls and knots. Select grade has the least visible features while rustic has the most. Standard is in the middle.

Choosing Timber for Flooring

According to Jack Kyle, owner of Narangba Timbers: “There are a lot of different types of timber available for timber flooring. We carry nothing but high quality products, making the choices a matter of taste and usage. Even though all hardwoods are hard, flooring that is going to get heavy use should be of a timber with a higher hardness rating.”

Mr Kyle continued, “The finish you put on a timber floor is important, too, as is the colour of the timber. Some people stain their floors while others prefer to let the natural colour and grain of the timber show through a clear finish. Some use oil while others use urethane. For heavy duty use, we recommend polyurethane because it is the hardest and most durable finish.”

Mr Kyle concluded, “Our customer service staff are great at helping customers combine the aesthetics they want with the intended usage of the floor.”
