Recruitment specialists urge mining workers to be prepared and proactive in face of industry lull

Announcement posted by Azure HR 01 May 2015

Western Australia’s plummeting iron ore prices have caused a domino effect in the state’s mining industry, sparking mass retrenchments and high levels of stress amongst workers concerned their marching orders are just around the corner.

Amidst the growing uncertainty for some of the industry’s workforce, Managing Director of Azure HR, Adrian Robinson, is urging workers to start building resilience in the face of change.

“With so many redundancies and cut-backs industry wide, the employment market is fast becoming highly saturated with job seekers, making it as tough and competitive as ever,” he said.

“You can’t control the changes happening around you, but you can ensure you’re ready to take on the change with resilience and confidence.

“If, like so many others feeling the stress of the mining downturn at the moment, you feel uncertain about your future, it’s critical to start your preparations now.”

Mr Robinson says the first step for would-be job seekers should be to evaluate what their skillsets and marketable attributes are.

“Doing an evaluation will help highlight any shortfalls or gaps you might have so you know what you’re up against in the job market and can start creating a competitive edge for yourself,” he said.

“When you’re potentially up against so many others in the same boat, being prepared and knowing your edge will make that transition a lot less stressful.”

But no matter how prepared one might be, Mr Robinson said there’s no doubt these challenging times leave a very unsettling feeling in the air, with so many wondering where to from here.

“Whether a career change is in order or you’re simply wanting to weigh up your options, a coach or mentor can help you get ready to take on the job market and put your best foot forward.”

“Having a professional mentor to lean on during these times certainly makes for smoother sailing and will give you the confidence to take on your future with success.”
