Fortinet survey reveals growing cyber threat concerns

Announcement posted by Creative Data 18 May 2015

Implications of CSO’s lack of confidence in their ability to stop data breaches to be highlighted at upcoming AUSCert 2015 Conference

Sydney, 18 May, 2015 – A groundbreaking industry survey commissioned by Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT) - a global leader in high-performance cyber security solutions - and carried out by the Cyber Security Trust, reveals that only 28 percent of IT security professionals in Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK and the US are confident they have done enough to prevent a security incident.

These results, along with other trending network security topics such as Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and high-performance Internal Network Firewalls (INFW) for datacentres, will be highlighted by Fortinet at AusCERT 2015, the 14th annual AusCERT Information Security Conference to be held on 1-5 June at the Royal Pines Resort in Queensland’s Gold Coast.

Old school security won’t do

“The evolving threat landscape puts everyone at greater risk,” said Derek Manky, senior security strategist at Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs and featured speaker at AUSCert 2015, “particularly organisations that aren't taking the time to rethink their approach to security. An old school approach won't do. Businesses should seek out a best-of-breed security partner with scale, third-party validated solutions and access to the most up-to-date threat intelligence, to safeguard their networks from threats, no matter the type or where it is initiated, today and in the future.”

ANZ implications

“These concerns affect us all in the ANZ region,” says Jon McGettigan, Regional Director ANZ and South Pacific at Fortinet. “Indeed, last month’s NZ CIO Magazine quotes a prominent executive as saying ‘Security is the biggest issue facing the industry at the moment, not only finance but every industry.’ There is no question that the cyber threat environment remains dynamic and dangerous and is gaining in severity. The number of entry points cyber criminals can use to infiltrate enterprise networks and steal precious information is growing rapidly as the number of devices connected to the network increase.”

In the Cyber Security Trust survey of 250 IT professionals with authority over the security decisions for their organisations, more than half (57 percent) indicated they are most concerned about protecting customer data from cyber criminals. Only 28 percent of those surveyed, however, are completely confident their organisations have done everything possible to prevent a security incident. And 26 percent said they were only half-confident that they have taken the necessary measures to protect their organisation from potential risk.

Survey methodology

Research for the IT security professional Cyber Security Trust survey was conducted by CSO Strategic Marketing Services, an IDG Enterprise brand, on behalf of Fortinet. The poll surveyed 250 IT professionals responsible for their network security decisions, across Singapore, Hong Kong, the UK and the US during the month of March, 2015.
