Whey protein concentrate vs Whey protein Isolate

WPC v WPI

There are a number of protein powders currently on the market. The most popular proteins used by athletes today are Whey Protein Concentrate and Whey Protein Isolate.

The questions is what is the difference between these products?

Whey itself is a by-product of the cheese manufacturing process, the protein within the whey is then further isolated to create protein powders. Whey protein concentrate that is widely consumed by athletes has an 80% protein content with the remaining be made up of fats and carbohydrates. Whey protein isolate has been isolated even further and has 90% protein with less fats and carbohydrates relative to WPC.

It’s recognised that WPI is the superior protein as it absorbs quicker into your blood. WPI is also beneficial for people watching the carbohydrate and fat intake.

Common misconception: The protein powder market is full of blends which consist of a mix of both WPI and WPC. It’s important to note that in the majority of cases these blends have a large portion of WPC (the cheaper product) and only a very small amount of WPI. However, many consumers purchase these products believing it’s a 50/50 blend.

Black Belt Protein offers a clear choice of protein powder. Consumers can select either whey protein concentrate or whey protein isolate.

It’s something to think about when purchasing protein powders.
